Hampton Inn & Suites Newport/Middletown

Those familiar with the chain will not be surprised by the Hampton Inn’s exterior with a boxy white building and spacious front covered car port. Decor throughout the hotel is standard for the brand, but is all updated with a modern lobby (where the free breakfast is set out each morning) and sleek 24-hour front desk. The hotel tends have to a bustling vibe throughout with travelers heading into Newport or to conferences, but the rooms are quiet and spacious -- ideal for travelers looking to head into Newport but who also want to have a quiet place to sleep at night.

The convenient location outside of Newport also makes this hotel popular with families. Downtown Newport and Easton’s Beach are an easy 10- to 15-minute drive away from the hotel. However, the hotel is also an easy eight-minute drive away from the Naval Station and there is a moderately sized meeting room, so expect to see plenty of business and governmental travelers as well. 

Travelers looking to stay on the outskirts of Newport might consider Homewood Suites, for a similar convenient location and plenty of thoughtful extras like an evening social, back patio with grills, and putting green. Those looking for the traditional bed-and-breakfast experience could consider the funky, but historic, Gilded. It's in the Historic District of Newport and pays homage to the Gilded Age with ornate, over-the-top decor, and curated, small plates breakfast (for free). 

Situated on West Main Street, one of the main thoroughfares into downtown Newport, Hampton Inn is conveniently located within easy driving distance to popular tourist attractions. A shopping center with a grocery store, pharmacy, and a laundromat is a five- to seven-minute drive away from the hotel. The popular Easton’s Beach is a 10-minute drive from the hotel, and features a few parking lots and snack bars. The famous Cliff Walk -- a three-and-a-half-mile pathway bordering the shore and featuring stunning ocean views and lovely historic mansions -- is an eight-minute drive away from the hotel. 

The harbor area and bustling wharfs of downtown Newport are a 15-minute drive away from the hotel and feature a high concentration of quaint shops, popular restaurants, and lovely marina views. The Historic District of Newport is a seven-minute drive, to see many of the mansions Newport is famous for. Parking tends to be easier on the side streets in the Historic District, especially during high season, and it’s only a 15-minute walk from the Historic District to the Perry Mill Wharf in downtown Newport. 

It's a 10-minute drive to the International Tennis Hall of Fame or an eight-minute drive to the Naval War College Museum on Coasters Harbor Island. The Naval Station Newport PASS and ID is an eight-minute drive from the hotel. The Newport State Airport is a six-minute drive. 

There are 95 rooms at the Hampton Inn, and all of them are spacious and come with nice amenities. The decor throughout all the room categories is the same, but it is modern and updated. Expect to see padded headboards, king- or queen-size beds, and gray couches. Other furniture includes work desks, long dressers, and some sofa beds. Beds are comfortable with mattress pads, plenty of pillows, and duvets. A movable work tray is nice for business travelers needing to do some work.

Rooms come with some nice modern amenities including flat-screen TVs with premium cable and USB charging ports next to the beds. Travelers can expect mini-fridges, coffeemakers with free coffee, and microwaves. Bathrooms are spacious and feature standing showers or shower/tub combo and Waterpik showerheads. There are some nice extras in the bathrooms, including Neutrogena bath products, makeup remover wipes, hairdryers, and mouthwash. 

Features here go above and beyond for the price range. There is a nice indoor pool located near the lobby, with a hot tub and a few tables and chairs. The indoor pool has a tendency to get a bit steamy and can be overrun with kids and families playing, but it has a spacious terrace and plenty of light. A small fitness center offers a few Precor cardio machines, medicine ball, and free weights. While it's a small space, it is air-conditioned, clean, and free earbuds and a flat-screen TV are on offer for guests.

A free hot and cold breakfast with a waffle station, eggs, and pastries is available throughout the morning. Coffee is set out by the front desk from early morning until late at night. Fresh fruit is placed out in the lobby following breakfast for guests to snack on throughout the day, with lollipops (or snacks) located by the front desk. A small 24-hour convenience store where travelers can pick up frozen dinners, snacks, or toiletries, is located adjacent to the front desk. 

There is a small, but private business center located near the lobby where guests can use a computer or print documents. A meeting room is often used for conferences. The small coin-operated laundry room is a nice feature. There is plenty of on-site parking and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
