Bottom Line

The 281-room, mid-range Dionysos Hotel is located on a quiet street, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. A gorgeous saltwater pool and three restaurants with good reviews make this a lovely place to spend a laid-back vacation. Many areas are beautiful, particularly outdoor spaces, but most interior spaces are in need of a refresh. Simply decorated rooms are comfortable with mini-fridges, small flat-screen TVs, and safes (for a fee) but no kettles or coffeemakers in lower-category rooms. All have furnished balconies and apartment-style rooms add kitchenettes. Those who prefer to be right on the beach should check out Amathus Beach Hotel Rhodes, but rates are higher.

Dionysos Hotel

Scene

Lush gardens and many beautiful spaces, but some dated areas

Some common areas at the Dionysos Hotel have lovely decor, with large skylights and vegetation creating a natural feeling inside, while alfresco restaurant seating spills out around the pool. These spaces blur the line between inside and out, creating a light, airy atmosphere. The lobby is a large, open space with a blend of antique and modern elements -- think glossy marble floors, modern lighting, and antique curios -- plus seating reminiscent of patio furniture with brightly colored cushions amid potted plants that creates an outdoorsy feeling. In restaurants, tall windows and folding glass walls take advantage of the beautiful grounds and let in tons of natural light. However, other spaces feel dated, particularly hallways and lesser-used common areas. Stucco walls, old red carpet next to painted green doors, and furniture that could be at home in a cabin do not have the same appeal.

The grounds are lush and peaceful, and include an impressive garden with paths and sitting areas to enjoy. Outdoor restaurant seating has plenty of shade, with flowers and tall trees creating a beautiful environment. While there are some family-friendly features, this hotel is largely enjoyed by couples looking for a quiet, relaxing vacation.

Rooms

Appealing rooms with some dated design features, mini-fridges, and balconies

Rooms are clean and comfortable, but outfitted with some dated decor. Marble tile and a cheerful yellow accent wall are appealing, as is classic artwork such as prints of The Birth of Venus. However, carpeted sections are less attractive and patterns on some bedspreads, runners, and curtains are out of style. Furnished balconies are generally spacious and some have lovely views to the sea. All rooms have a 32-inch flat-screen TV (or larger) and a mini-fridge, but they lack kettles and use of the safe requires a fee. Higher-tier rooms may have wood flooring in place of carpet and brighter accents like a lime-green leather headboard. Studios and apartments have a basic kitchenette with a coffeemaker and stovetop, as well as a sitting area. Bathrooms can be tight, and are usually equipped with a curtained shower/tub combo. A hose-style hairdryer is provided and free toiletries include body wash, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and a sewing kit.

Features

Good food, a gorgeous pool, kids’ activities with a playground, and sporting courts

The beautiful seawater pool is the highlight of this hotel, with good food and entertainment options making it a solid vacation spot. The huge pool is surrounded by tall trees and flowers, featuring patios jutting into the water and bridges that connect a series of islands with sunbeds and seating for the swim-up pool bar. There are also a small, covered freshwater pool and a shallow kiddy pool in the area. Plenty of free sunbeds -- some with umbrellas -- are spread around the space so no one area feels overcrowded.

A free, American breakfast buffet is provided with a nice variety of options. A poolside Greek and Mediterranean restaurant and a grill restaurant provide a la carte options, with a menu for half-board guests. The food at all three restaurants is well-reviewed; guests enjoy the meals and find the portions large. Additionally, a souvlaki stand by the pool is available for a traditional bite on the go, plus a coffee shop serves cake and ice cream snacks.

A covered game area includes billiards, table tennis, air hockey, and a few coin-operated games. Kids can also make use of a mini-golf course and a spacious, partially shaded playground with a few toys and a trampoline. Although there's no gyn, tennis, basketball, and mini soccer courts are on-site. Massages and a sauna are available for an extra fee. A small mini-mart has gifts and convenience items for purchase. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
