Bottom Line

Suited for longer stays, the mid-range Amarte Hotel is a reasonably priced option about a five-minute drive from Maroma Beach and 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen. The 24 thatched-roof rooms are air-conditioned and have terraces with hammocks, plus free Wi-Fi -- some also include kitchenettes. While rooms are spacious, they show some wear and lack TVs. Dining is limited to a fast-food restaurant where a free breakfast is served. Other features include a lagoon-like pool and an art gallery. The atmosphere is tranquil and relaxing, but travelers looking to be closer to the action in Playa del Carmen and the beach with more quaint style should consider La Pasion Hotel Boutique, which has similar rates.

Amarte Hotel

Scene

Small hotel with lush tropical gardens and a tranquil, relaxing atmosphere on the Riviera Maya

Amarte Hotel is a gated complex of terraced, thatched-roof bungalows set amid winding paths in a lush tropical setting with several ponds and fountains -- it's especially romantic at night, when everything is nicely lit. All of these features combine to create a relaxed and tranquil setting that's helped in part by the hotel's distance from major towns like Playa del Carmen and Cancun. There aren't many places for guests to hang out, and this hotel works better as a place to sleep at night after a day spent exploring. The outdoor pool sits amid tall palms, and provides a pleasant spot for kicking back. The hotel's entrance is shared by the restaurant and other hotels, and it may be a little confusing at first. While the hotel’s public areas are well-maintained, some rooms could use an update and new air-conditioning units. The thatched-roof lobby is outdoors, and it's common to see the hotel's pets wandering about. A few peacocks roam along the meandering paths as well, giving everything even more of a tropical vibe. The hotel draws European travelers, couples, families, and retirees, and is especially popular with nature enthusiasts.

Location

Surrounded by gardens on the Riviera Maya's main freeway, a five-minute drive to Maroma Beach

The Amarte Hotel is situated on the Riviera Maya's main freeway, yet few signs are visible from the road except for the Burger Stop restaurant, which may be difficult to see at night. Guests wanting to explore the area or visit any beaches will need a car as there isn't much within walking distance. Maroma Beach is a five-minute drive from the hotel and the lively town of Playa del Carmen is 20 minutes away by car. Other nearby attractions include Cirque du Soleil (a five-minute drive), and several ecological theme parks, like Crococun, Selvatica, Xoximilco, and Xcaret, all of which are within a 30-minute drive. It's about a 30-minute drive to Cancun International Airport, and downtown Cancun is 15 minutes farther.

Rooms

Spacious, air-conditioned rooms; some with kitchenettes and Junior Suites with private terraces

Amarte Hotel has 24 rooms are set in lush gardens and housed in duplex bungalows with thatched ceilings that create a sense of spaciousness. A few Junior Suites are available in independent units with private terraces, while Standard Rooms share a terrace. Standard Rooms and Suites feature hammocks on the terraces that make a relaxation-inspiring first impression. Unfortunately, once inside, things are a little worn. An abundance of simple white and pastel tones plus small watercolors on the stucco walls keep things bright. However, fabrics come in older striped patterns and mid-tone wood furniture had some scrapes on it when we visited. A fresh coat of paint would also help alleviate some of the dingy corners and edges that we spotted. All rooms are air-conditioned, though some unites are out of date, and include ceiling fans, sofas or banquette seating, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms include kitchenettes, but none have TVs, which may be off-putting to certain travelers. Bathrooms are nicely sized and include modern vanities and showers. Junior Suites have larger bathrooms with a mosaic-tile shower/tub combo that's a sharp step up from lower-category rooms.

Features

Outdoor swimming pool, art gallery, lush gardens, and outdoor/indoor areas for events, weddings, and yoga

Features aren't numerous here, which can be a bit of a problem as there isn't anything to see or do within an easy walk. The hotel stands out for its lush, tropical gardens, within which sits the lagoon-style pool. It's a bit deep for children and isn't heated, but there are a few lounge chairs and shaded areas set up around the pool's perimeter. Guests can also use a sister beach club on Maroma Beach, one of the best in the area, with beach towels and transportation provided.

A spacious, air-conditioned art gallery is open throughout the day and part of the night, with contemporary artwork, reading areas, and a piano. There's a large yoga room on-site, with classes during peak season. A proper restaurant is in the works, but for now guests can ask to be taken to the sister hotel's beachside Pavo Real restaurant by shuttle. The other dining option is Burger Stop, the fast-food restaurant where the free continental buffet is served.

There's a tour desk and two ATMs, one for dollars and one for pesos. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Additionally, a thatched open-air hut is available for outdoor events, weddings and receptions.
