Review Summary

Photos and Review by

  • Remote location better suited for eco-tourists, as it is far from nightlife and shopping
  • Old tube TVs in some suites
  • Complaints of food service being slow during peak seasons
  • Fee for Wi-Fi use (except Preferred Club guests)
  • Some complaints of musty smell in rooms
  • Seaweed on beach

Bottom Line

The 431-room Dreams Tulum is an all-inclusive megaresort in a secluded location near Mayan ruins and about a 40-minute drive from Playa Del Carmen. It offers sprawling, manicured grounds, plenty of amenities, and a white-sand beach that is one of the most tranquil in the area. However, the hotel's massive size means that the wait for a seat at dinner can be long, and the overall ambience may seem more impersonal than intimate. Rooms are large and feature a blend of colonial furnishings and high-tech amenities, such as iPod docks. Charges for services such as in-room Wi-Fi use, though, may leave some guests feeling nickel-and-dimed.

In remote Tulum, on a calm stretch of beach far from Cancun and Playa del Carmen

Map of Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa

Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa is located about a 40-minute drive south of Playa Del Carmen. It is quite secluded for an all-inclusive, with gorgeous natural surroundings that have more to offer eco-tourists than shoppers or party animals. Great snorkeling in the world's second largest barrier reef can be found right offshore. Nearby Mayan ruins are just a five-minute drive from the resort and offer a striking setting on a cliff overlooking the ocean. If you're looking to explore a bit further outside the area, be forewarned that cabs can be pricey (about $100 round-trip to Playa del Carmen). A shuttle bus is also available, for $20 to downtown Playa Del Carmen.

Riviera Maya is the section of Caribbean coastline stretching between Cancun in the north and Tulum in the south. The beaches and the nightlife are the main draws here, and though some visitors never leave their mega-resort, some of Mexico’s best Mayan ruins are a short drive away. Here, you can sunbathe and swim at beautiful beaches, snorkel in the world’s second largest coral reef, visit archaeological sites dating back to the 7th century A.D., go shopping, dine in great international restaurants, and party like a spring breaker -- all in one day.
