Bottom Line

The Hacienda Hotel Morelos is a budget hotel in downtown Puerto Morelos, right on the beach. The 31 rooms are basic and nothing special, but some do offer ocean views and/or mini-fridges. Hotel amenities are more attractive in comparison and include free Wi-Fi, an outdoor terrace with lounge chairs, a small pool, and plenty of beach space. There's also a charming Mexican bar/restaurant with rustic woodwork and tile as well as outdoor seating. Travelers may also want to consider Acamaya Reef, a nearby beachfront property with rustic bungalows, some with air-conditioning.

Hotel Hacienda Morelos

Scene

Budget hacienda property in the heart of the Puerto Morelos fishing village

The Hotel Hacienda Morelos is a budget property best suited to those who enjoy lounging on the beach off the beaten path. The property has a ranch-like feel, with stonework and adobe tiles, along with ceramic, rustic woodwork, brick, wagon-wheel chandeliers, and leather throughout. There’s also a book cubby in the main lobby with leather-padded wood benches with wagon-wheel ends, and suits of armor in the area between the lobby and the bar. Other common areas include a strip of terrace that stretches along the front of the building, with a few lounge chairs set up, a shaded area for outdoor seating for the restaurant, and a small pool. Expect to see plenty of wear and tear, especially in the walkways and stairways to the rooms, where there are cracked and missing tiles, cracked walls, faded paint, and mold from constant weathering.

Location

In the heart of the fishing village of Puerto Morelos

The hotel is located in the increasingly touristed fishing village of Puerto Morelos on the Yucatan Peninsula, in between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Weekends in particular are jam-packed with visitors walking the streets and taking in the local color and style. The Hacienda is located across from the main square and the primary beach, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants in the immediate area. Buses and taxis can take you out to the main highway, where you can then catch a bus or taxi north to Cancun (where the nearest airport is located) or south to Playa del Carmen; the journey takes around half an hour in either direction.

Rooms

Simple, minimalist rooms with ocean views and some small art

The 31 rooms at this budget hotel are basic and functional, with generic tiled floors and white walls, though painted adobe tile accents on the walls above the beds and benches, plus decorative alcoves add a touch of charm to the otherwise bland spaces. Rooms have older wooden furniture, and Standard Rooms have tiny tube TVs, while more recently updated Deluxe Rooms feature wall-mounted flat-screen TVs as well as mini-fridges and tiny modern sofas. Bathrooms are functional but unimpressive, with walk-in showers, but those in the Standard Rooms have discolored or missing grout, and worn fixtures.

Features

Small, charming restaurant, tiny pool, and plenty of beach space for lounging

Hotel features are limited, but include a small on-site restaurant that serves breakfasts, lunches, and dinners in a charming hacienda-style setting or out on the covered terrace looking over the ocean. There’s also a small pool with room for a few adults plus hammocks, lounge chairs, and sunbeds on the beach. The waters here tend to be calm and good for swimming throughout the year. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and there's street parking available out front.
