Bottom Line

Los Lirios Hotel Cabanas is a mid-range boutique hotel directly on the beach in the heart of Tulum. Many of the 64 air-conditioned rooms here have balconies with direct or partial ocean views, and those that don't still look out on the pleasant grounds, with plenty of tropical greenery. Amenities include a tiny pool with room for just a few guests plus an on-site restaurant serving breakfast and dinner buffets (but no lunch). Unfortunately, there's no Wi-Fi. While this is a good choice for families and couples alike, couples willing to pay a little more for something more intimate should consider the Kore Resort, which has a larger pool along with two gourmet restaurants.

Los Lirios Hotel Cabanas

Scene

Simple, mid-range option right on the coast of Tulum

Popular with families, couples, and friends traveling together, Los Lirios isn't much to look at from the exterior, but things get considerably better once inside the property. Just past the first line of residential buildings, palm tree-lined stretches of white-sand beaches and the turquoise waters of the ocean seem to stretch out for miles in both directions. Palm trees and tropical vegetation mix with the sand throughout, and there’s plenty of shade, though the beachfront can get a bit toasty in the early morning hours until the afternoon, when the sun moves behind the resort.

The property has a bohemian, rustic vibe, with white-stucco buildings set up throughout the property, cute stone-lined pathways throughout, and rustic wood railings everywhere. Not all of the rooms have direct ocean views -- some only look over the interior of the property. The on-site restaurant is one of the more popular common areas, with an indoor bar and seating inside under the shade of the roof, with panoramic views out over the property and the ocean beyond. There’s more seating outside, with lounge chairs set up under the palm trees. The beach is kept pretty clean, though seaweed can be an issue part of the year.

Location

Beachfront location in the heart of Tulum’s Hotel Zone

Los Lirios is set in the heart of the Riviera Tulum’s tourist strip, a stretch of white-sand beach that runs for miles both north and south of the hotel. It’s relatively close to the turn-off to downtown Tulum, about a 20-minute drive away (reaching the city's famed Mayan ruins takes around the same amount of time). It takes about an hour by car to reach Playa del Carmen and upwards of 90 minutes to get to the international airport in Cancun.

Rooms

Simple but charming rooms with balconies, many with ocean views

Los Lirios offers 64 air-conditioned rooms across four categories: Garden Views, Partial Ocean Views, Ocean View Suites, and Master Ocean Fronts, which come with whirlpools. Decor is consistent throughout the room types, with white walls and dark wood trim along with pops of color in the form of orange and blue throw cushions. All have balconies with hammocks and wicker furniture, and many have ocean views. Bathrooms have stone tiled floors and walls plus granite or marble countertops and shower/tub combos. Note that rooms aren't equipped with Wi-Fi, though those closest to the restaurant and reception may get weak signals.

Features

On-site restaurant, pool, and playground, plus free Wi-Fi (but only in common areas)

Los Lirios doesn't have the extensive facilities found at resorts, but there is a restaurant and bar with indoor and outdoor seating, where breakfast (often included in room rates) and dinner buffets are served. The hotel's small pool is just out front of the restaurant and has a few lounge chairs. There’s also a small children’s playground set up in the sand off to the right of the restaurant, plus plenty of lounge chairs on the sand directly in front of the beach.
