Bottom Line

Posada Lamar is a rustic clustering of eight cabins about midway down Tulum's beach road. While charming, this mid-range property is not for everyone -- those who are skittish about bugs may find these unsealed rooms unsettling (the truly bug squeamish should check out a room in town), and travelers requiring modern comforts, pristine rooms, and spotless bathroom fixtures might want to look elsewhere. Accommodations are open air and exposed to the elements, and their wear and tear reflects this. But the laid-back, quiet beach vibe, colorful folk art decor, and the rugged beauty will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and those seeking an unplugged getaway. Electricity comes from solar panels and wind generators, and lights are kept low so as not to interrupt the breeding cycle of the blue crab, sea birds, iguanas, and sea turtles that lay their eggs in the sand.

Posada Lamar

Scene

Quiet resort with laid-back, rustic vibe and eco-friendly practices

Posada Lamar is made up of eight, free-standing cabins built from recycled materials, including wood and bamboo. Roofs are palapa-style, made from palm fronds. Porch railings are built from thick logs, which still carry their natural, gnarled appearance. These one- and two-level structures are a few feet from the beach. Palms, shrubs, and bright-green jungle plants grow around buildings, many of which have unobstructed ocean views. The sand pathways that run between cabins, while great for walking barefoot, may prove challenging to guests with limited mobility. Like most eco-properties along the Hotel Zone's beach road, electricity, powered by solar panels and wind generators, is limited at Posada Lamar, and lights don't go on until the evening hours. Hot water is consistently available, though, along with free Wi-Fi.

Location

About midway down the beach road, near restaurants and a dive shop

Posada Lamar is about halfway down the busy Hotel Zone's beach road, and is within a five- to 10-minute walk of shops and restaurants. A bike path runs along large sections of this road, and bikes can be rented at many locations throughout the area. Diving and water sports equipment can be rented at Mexi Divers shop, which is about a 15-minute walk from Posada Lamar. Tulum's Maya ruins are about a 10-minute drive north, and the Sian-Ka'an biosphere, with its cenote, exotic birds, monkeys, and remarkable jungle flora, is about a 10- to 15-minute drive in the other direction. This protected land spans along the coast to the south, as well as inland. Cancun International Airport is about an hour and a half away by car.

Rooms

Rustic simplicity with reliable hot water and free, strong Wi-Fi

Each room at Posada Lamar contains one or two beds with mosquito netting and sparse furniture. Wood or stone platforms support the beds lifting them off the floor. Local folk art, including Maya-style rugs, tapestries, and carvings add distinctiveness to these simple and spare accommodations. Large windows, covered with flowing, colorful curtains, let in significant amounts of natural light. There are no TVs, air-conditioning, or phones, but Wi-Fi works well. Pipes and fittings for utilities are not completely embedded, and copper water pipes run along the walls in the bathrooms. Showers (with reliable hot water) are tiled and hand-painted but have only a low lip built into the floors to separate them from the toilet and sink areas. Puddles from escaped shower water can make floors slippery and potentially hazardous. Bar soap is the only toiletry provided, so guests should plan on bringing their own hair- and skin-care products. The natural construction of these cabins has led to a few leaks and cracks, which in turn let in insects and small amounts of water during heavy rains. All cabins have private, furnished porches with chairs and hammocks.
