Villa Pescadores Tulum

The name of this hotel translates to "fishermen's villa," and the area where it is located belongs to the cooperative society of fishermen of Tulum. The fishermen built the huts in 2002 for their own use. In 2014, they signed an agreement for the huts to be turned into a hotel. All of the buildings are rustic wood huts with thatched roofs, and the atmosphere is eco-chic. The sandy grounds are filled with palm trees and lush tropical plants. Hammocks hang all over, inviting guests to relax and unwind. At night, you can take in great views of the stars and hear the sound of crickets and the palm trees moving in the breeze. Guests check in at the reception hut and are greeted with a welcome drink. The lobby is an open space that holds a gift shop as well as the restaurant and bar. Chairs out front provide a place where guests can hang out, and there are books to read. It's a laid-back, relaxing place that's appealing to all small groups of friends and families, though couples are the most frequent guests.

The hotel is located on the beautiful white sand beach in Tulum, surrounded by jungle. It's about a 15-minute walk from Tulum's Mayan ruins and a 15-minute drive from Tulum town. Several restaurants are within walking distance, and there are a number of other casual, no-frills beachfront hotels up and down the coast, many within an easy walk. The ADO bus station is about a 15-minute drive from the hotel, and Cancun International Airport is about 90 minutes away by car. 

All rooms here are wooden bungalows with thatched roofs, and the style throughout helps make these a sharp alternative to the many utterly simple beach huts found in Tulum. Decor is rustic-chic and includes hand-crafted wood furniture, wood flooring, and mosquito netting on beds. Most have soft yellow walls and white bedding. Bright accent rugs add color and character, as do painted chests. All have air-conditioning supplemented by ceiling fans, though the air-conditioners are only available overnight. Other amenities include sofa beds, mini-fridges, safes, robes, and free Wi-Fi. TVs are absent. Colorful water dispensers provide purified drinking water. Private bathrooms have showers, long countertops with rustic industrial-style faucets, and toiletries. All rooms have outdoor spaces with chairs and hammocks. Views are of the garden or the ocean, though some only have partial views. Some are directly on the beach. Suites are larger, but the beds and seating areas are in the same room. 

There aren't too many features at this hotel, though what's on offer is at least on par with most other Tulum eco hotels. The restaurant is open all day, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The specials menu changes daily, with a focus on fresh ingredients -- especially fish. The open-air space on the beach is casual and laid-back, with a high thatched roof and ceiling fans overhead. Tables and chairs are rustic wood with blue cushions in the chairs. Colorful murals add a touch of whimsy. There's also a beach bar with a thatched roof and wooden swings in place of bar stools. Tables and chairs are topped by a tent. The wide, sandy beach is gorgeous, and cushioned double daybeds topped by umbrellas are available for relaxing on the sand. There is no pool or spa. An array of activities are available on-site or nearby, including yoga, bicycling, fishing, diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing. A boutique sells clothing, accessories, and gift items, and the hotel can host weddings. Wi-Fi and parking are both free.
