Bottom Line

The Occidental Grand is a small beachfront all-inclusive (by megaresort standards) centrally located in Nuevo Vallarta. It has many of the amenities found in larger resorts, including an adults-only pool and a kiddy pool, four restaurants, a supervised kids’ club, and a sandy beach with loungers, straw umbrellas, and a snack bar. However, there’s no spa, Wi-Fi is not free (except for the Royal Club guests), and some king beds are actually two twins pushed together. Rooms have contemporary decor and feel spacious and modern, with flat-screen TVs and iPod docks (in most rooms), but very few rooms have balconies, and room service is only available for Royal Club guests. It’s cheaper than neighboring Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta, but it’s worth comparing prices with other resorts in the area.

Oyster Hotel Review

A small all-inclusive on a pretty stretch of sand shared with other resorts

With only 270 rooms, the Occidental Grand is a relatively small all-inclusive by megaresort standards. It’s mostly quiet (certainly mellower than next-door neighbor Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta), but it can get a little busy during the weekends, as non-guests can purchase day passes to use the pool, the restaurants, and the beach.

One of the most striking features of this hotel is its soaring lobby, which has huge floor-to-ceiling windows and appealing contemporary decor in beige and funky patterns. Behind the lobby, the lounge offers ample space and plush seating where guests can have drinks and afternoon hors d’oeuvres, offered as part of the all-inclusive plan. Beyond the building lie the pools, the restaurant, and the beach, all of them overlooked by the rooms.

The resort is popular with families due to its kids’ club, kiddy pool, and nice beach, but couples are also drawn to the hotel for its spacious, appealing rooms, solid restaurants, and central location. The hotel feels upscale overall, but it’s lacking a few important touches, including balconies in rooms (only a few units have them), upscale toiletries (the hotel only provides soap), room service, and more high-tech in-room amenities.

For added luxury, the hotel offers the Royal Club section, which features a private lounge, a separate restaurant, and great services, such as daily restocking of the minibar, free high-speed Internet access, and private check-in area. However, some of these amenities are standard in other all-inclusive properties, so it’s worth comparing prices and features included in the rate.

Map of Occidental Nuevo Vallarta

The Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta sits right on the beach in the leafy enclave of Nuevo Vallarta. Located north of Puerto Vallarta’s international airport, the resort is a 20-minute drive or more from downtown Vallarta, depending on traffic. It may not seem far, but the difference in atmosphere is huge; wide, quiet streets, lavish homes with private docks and bobbing yachts, high-end hotels, and other signs of wealth are everywhere evident in Nuevo Vallarta. It is a great spot for those who seek a tranquil beach vacation, far from downtown's busy streets.

Traffic can be heavy in and around Puerto Vallarta, so what should normally be a 20-minute drive to downtown can take up to 45 minutes with traffic.

  • 12-minute drive to Licenciado Diaz Ordaz International Airport
  • 5-minute drive to eco-park Vallarta Adventures
  • 5-minute drive to El Tigre Golf Course
  • 10-minute drive to Flamingos Golf Club
  • 15-minute drive to Bucerias
  • 20-minute drive to downtown Puerto Vallarta
  • 30-minute drive to Sayulita
  • 35-minute drive to Punta Mita

Spacious and contemporary -- but missing some basics

The resort offers eight room types, including Deluxe Rooms, studios, one- and two-bedroom suites, and penthouses, as well as Luxury Rooms, Junior Suites, and Master Suites in the Royal Club. Most rooms have ocean views -- but only a few offer balconies -- and almost 50 overlook the gardens instead. Decor is upscale and stylish, with bright pops of color, different shades of beige, and dark furniture. Bathrooms are spacious and contemporary, with vessel sinks on marble countertops.

  • Large flat-screen TVs with cable
  • iPod docks (in most rooms)
  • Empty mini-fridges (stocked minibars in Royal Club rooms)
  • King beds in all rooms (some rooms have two twins pushed together instead)
  • Royal Club rooms feature pillow menus and DVD players
  • Very few rooms have balconies
  • All rooms have at least a small table with two chairs
  • Fee for Wi-Fi (only Royal Club guests have free access to a business center)
  • Soap is the only toiletry item provided

A large adults-only pool with activities, and an adjacent kiddy pool

The resort has two pools: an adults-only pool and a wading pool for kids. While the large one is mostly reserved for adults, some guests complain about kids using it on weekends when it’s busier. Furthermore, the kiddy pool is right next to the adults-only pool, so it’s not as quiet as pools reserved for adults at other resorts. However, this is convenient for parents who want to keep an eye on their kids but still be able to enjoy the pool themselves.

  • Adults-only pool with loungers, umbrellas, volleyball net and ocean views; daily activities available
  • Large kiddy pool adjacent to adults-only pool
  • Bar service available for a fee
  • Pool bar housed in a palapa near the beach

Multi-room suites, a kids’ club, and a kiddy pool make it a solid pick for families.

  • One- and two-bedroom suites
  • Cribs available on request
  • Supervised kids’ club for children four to 12
  • Kiddy pool adjacent to adults-only pool
  • Sandy beach with volleyball court and soccer goals
  • Five-minute drive to Vallarta Adventures eco-park, offering activities with dolphins and day trips

Four restaurants and three bars -- but only the buffet and the snack bar are open for lunch

  • The buffet is open for all three meals and serves international food
  • Los Olivos serves Italian and Mediterranean cuisine for dinner only; reservations required.
  • La Hacienda offers Mexican specialties for dinner; reservations required.
  • The Royal Club Restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner to Royal Club guests only.
  • Room service is for Royal Club guests only.
  • Beach Club Bar offers snacks and small bites until late at night.
  • The snack bar opens after noon and closes before dinner.
  • The lounge bar opens after breakfast and closes late at night; drinks and hors d’oeuvres are available throughout the day.

The hotel offers adequate services, but nothing notably luxurious

  • Porter and concierge services
  • Secretarial services
  • Business center with two computers (for a fee; free for Royal Club guests)
  • Flexible meeting space with DVD players, Wi-Fi, and audiovisual equipment
  • Wedding planners
  • Weekly manager’s cocktail party
  • Souvenir shop
  • Front desk can arrange spa treatments off-site

Physical Activities

All the basics, including a fitness center and free non-motorized water sports

  • Free non-motorized water sports
  • Tennis court with light for night play
  • Fitness center with several machines
  • Volleyball net in the pool, plus a beach volley court
  • Daily activities at the pool, including aqua aerobics
