Bottom Line

The 16-room mid-range Hotel Manfredi has a terrific location near the Spanish Steps but few services. The building itself dates back to the 1700s, and, as with many historic hotels, rooms suffer in size; the decor is elegant but borders on kitschy. Still, it's ideal for tourists who want to be surrounded by the restaurants, dining, and historic sights of central Rome. The hotel's excellent free breakfast is homemade by an in-house pastry chef, and the 24-hour room service is a rarity in this price category in Rome. The property's intimate size means guests can get personalized attention from staff.

Hotel Manfredi Suite in Rome

Scene

A small property that takes on some of the historic air of its surrounding neighborhood

Anyone looking to feel surrounded by Roman history will appreciate the Hotel Manfredi Suite’s location: It’s housed in a building that still maintains its original spiral staircase, and the hotel only begins at the third floor. Yet outside of a small lobby area and breakfast room hued in gold and red, public space is practically nonexistent, and the rooms themselves aren't particularly large.

Location

In the center of Rome’s historic center, barely a block away from the Spanish Steps

The Hotel Manfredi wins big points for its location. It’s on a historic street right in the city center, a block away from the Spanish Steps, a five-minute walk from the Piazza del Popolo, and a 10-minute stroll to the Trevi Fountain. It's just a bit farther to the Pantheon and the popular Piazza Navona area (around 15 minutes). The immediate area is flush with some of the city’s best high-end dining and shopping experiences and is well serviced by public transportation.

Rooms

Rooms are clean but tiny, with decor that's either elegant or kitschy, depending on guest tastes

Overall, Hotel Manfredi’s rooms are clean and quiet with comfortable bedding, ranging in size from small, double bed offerings to suites. The standard rooms are tight on space. The historic decor style varies a bit by room type, but may include canopy beds with bright yellow drapes, ornate wallpaper, heavily tasseled drapes, and gilded items galore; some may find it a bit kitschy. The bathrooms are also small in many rooms, presenting some issues for taller guests, but are nonetheless up-to-date; the showers have an array of controls and features, besting most TV sets. Some upper-level rooms have whirlpool baths.

The Hotel Manfredi Suite in Rome offers free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and around-the-clock room service for guests. The breakfast, which is made by the hotel's in-house pastry chef, is a highlight; it includes fresh fruit, hot breads, cereal, numerous pastries, eggs, bacon, meats, cheeses, and fresh Italian coffee. There aren't many other services, but the hotel’s central location is a valued asset. Limousine service and tour guides are available for a fee.
