Bottom Line

The Hotel Regno is a three-pearl, dated property, with a central location near the Trevi Fountain, that puts it in easy walking distance of many Roman tourist sites. The 69 rooms have a dated look, with a liberal use of harvest gold on bedspreads and worn tiles in the bathrooms, though some have redeeming balconies with rooftop views. There aren't a ton of amenities, though Wi-Fi and breakfast are free and concierge services are available through the front desk. For more up-to-date interiors, visitors may want to consider the Hotel Scalinata Di Spagna instead.

Hotel Regno

Scene

Family-run, reasonably priced hotel in need of updating

The Hotel Regno is a good value hotel, given its location, cleanliness, and practical amenities. Interiors, however, are dated and look cheap and worn in places. Housed in a 16th-century beige masonry building with long, shutter-framed windows, the hotel has a traditional lobby with a reception desk, a rack of brochures, and an upholstered chair, plus a black-tile floor and a white, cove ceiling with high-hat lights and a few prints of iconic Roman sites. The breakfast room is the only other common area and includes a bar with some burled wood and brass Art Deco finishes plus a flat-screen TV, burgundy leather chairs, and leather, half-round banquettes in mint green. Most guests are tourists who want easy access to local sites but don't want to pay the high prices of more upscale properties in the area.

Location

In the heart of Rome, within walking distance of many major tourist sites

The best aspect of the Hotel Regno is its location near many of Rome's major tourist sites. The hotel is a three-minute walk to the 18th-century Trevi Fountain and five minutes on foot to the Pantheon. In seven minutes on foot, guests can reach the Piazza Venezia, while the Piazza Navona is a 10-minute walk and the Spanish Steps take 11 minutes to reach on foot. The iconic Forum is a 12-minute walk, while Campo de Fiori, known for its morning markets, is a 14-minute walk away. It's also 14 minutes on foot to the second-century Castel Sant'Angelo. The Colosseum is a nine-minute drive or 10-minute train ride. Palatine Hill, with its palace and museum, is also nine minutes by car or 17 minutes by train. It's a 14-minute drive to Villa Borghese or a 19-minute train ride. Villa Doria Pamphili is an 18-minute drive or 42 minutes by train. The charming Trastevere neighborhood is an 18-minute drive or a 16-minute train ride. Rome's Fiumicino Airport is 36 minutes away by car or 66 minutes by train.

Rooms

Simple, if dated, rooms some with balconies and Roman rooftop views

Spread over six floors, rooms at the Hotel Regno are plain and dated, with white paint or neutral wallpaper, heavy drapes, and prints of Roman sites. Beds often have burled-wood headboards, harvest gold bedspreads, and bright lighting. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, safes, and minibars, and robes. Bathrooms are dated, with worn-looking pale-blue and terra-cotta tiles. Note that there have been some complaints of malfunctioning showerheads in the shower/tub combos that cause water to spray onto the floors. Rooms are generally quiet, especially those on upper floors, and some have balconies with rooftop views. The top floor houses an apartment-like space with exquisite wood paneling, a wrap-around terrace with potted plants and wrought-iron furnishings, and a kitchenette. Extra beds, cribs, and high chairs are available on request.
