Bottom Line

The 19th century style of this 63-room hotel is opulent (some might say over-the-top), but it feels fitting in this grand, historic city. The rooms have details such as rich wallpaper, crown moldings, chandeliers, and gilded headboards, though some are quite small. The location in a residential area outside of the city center isn't ideal for seeing the sights, but the Porta Pia bus stop is right out the front door. It's an older property, with a few signs of wear, but many will consider the ornate charm ample compensation. Amenities are few, but the hotel does offer a free daily breakfast, rooftop terrace with views of the city walls and Porta Pia gate, and impressive meeting spaces.

Hotel Turner

Location

On Via Nomentana in Parioli, just outside of the city center

Hotel Turner is in a grandiose white building on the Via Nomentana, an ancient road that leads up to the city of Mentana. The hotel is in the neighborhood of Parioli, just outside of the city center.

Parioli is one of Rome's wealthiest residential neighborhoods, located to the north of the bustling, tourist-crowded city center. It's an area that trades in packed tour buses and ancient ruins for small groups of well-heeled visitors to Rome and elegant residences. Sure, there's the drawback of being farther from Rome's monuments, but it also puts you closer to some of Rome's best dining and nightlife. Many people consider staying here during their second or third visits to Rome, after they've gotten the Colosseum tours out of their systems. Just be prepared to take plenty of taxis or stay in the area: Rome's public transportation system is notoriously inadequate, though there is a bus stop outside the door of the hotel.

  • 25-minute drive to Rome Ciampino International Airport
  • 56-minute drive to Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport
  • 9-minute drive to Santa Maria degli Angeli
  • 10-minute drive to the Baths of Diocletian
  • 10-minute walk to the Trevi Fountain
  • 11-minute drive to the Termini station
  • 12-minute drive to Palazzo Barberini
  • 12-minute drive to the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
  • 12-minute drive to the Opera House
  • 14-minute drive to the Spanish Steps
  • 16-minute drive to the Colosseum
  • 16-minute drive to the Pantheon
  • 23-minute drive to the ancient Roman Forum
