Bottom Line

With its bold style and Michelin-star dining, the H'All Tailor Suite has made a name for itself. While similar area hotels like Margutta 19 and Palazzo Dama feature classic interiors, the H'All Tailor Suite is edgier, with funky artwork contrasting historic architecture. The 14 rooms are best for couples, as many are compact, though spacious suites are also available. Expect espresso machines, Smart TVs, and welcome treats, plus bathrooms with colorful LED lighting. The look won't be for everyone, but it's fun and lighthearted. The star of the show here is All'Oro, the Michelin-star restaurant run by the hotel's owners. Breakfast, which is included in rates, is a flurry of small plates delivered based on guests preferences for sweet or savory dishes (or both). It's something special, for sure.

The H’All Tailor Suite

Scene

Tranquil upscale hotel with a bold contemporary art collection and destination dining

The H'All Tailor Suite has a reputation that precedes it, and we heard whispers about this upscale property before arriving there during our 2018 trip to Rome. However, it's a bit different than the city's other top-tier hotels. While properties like Hotel Eden and Margutta 19 opt for classic Italian decor with contemporary twists, The H'All Tailor Suite has a more brash style. A pink gorilla sculpture, which sits below a grand central staircase, is infamous among the city's hoteliers, and walls throughout the property are decked with contemporary paintings and photographs. That style extends to the rooms as well. What perhaps makes this hotel a destination in its own right, though, is All'Oro, the Michelin-star restaurant that's helmed by the hotel's owners. The style downstairs in the dining room is moody and sexy, with Art Deco inspiration rendered in deep gray and black hues. The restaurant draws devoted locals and curious tourists, though you'll certainly need a reservation. In the summer, drinks on the terrace are lovely as well.

Location

In upmarket Flaminio, within an easy walk of Piazza del Popolo, Villa Borghese, and the metro

The Flaminio district sits just to the north of Piazza del Popolo and is far less touristy than the neighborhood just to its south, Campo Marzio. The area is mostly filled with calm, leafy streets and high-end apartments, but still within an easy walk of many major sights. If walking isn't your cup of tea, the metro is only five minutes from the hotel on foot, making trips to the Vatican Museums in 15 minutes or to the Colosseum in under 20 minutes. You can reach plenty of great destinations on foot, though, including monumental Piazza del Popolo, Via del Corso, Villa Borghese, the Prati district, and the Spanish Steps. You won't need more than a 15-minute walk to reach any of these. While the area is generally calmer than Rome's more buzzing tourist neighborhoods, you will still face typical Roman traffic and the road on which the hotel sits is far from calm. Budget about an hour to reach Fiumicino Airport by using the metro and trains from Termini Station. It's around 45 minutes to the airport by taxi.

Rooms

Range of configurations with bespoke style, plus espresso machines, welcome treats, and Smart TVs

The rooms here range from compact Classics to spacious suites, some of which are great for families and have two connecting bedrooms. Classic design details like chic canopy beds and chevron parquet floors are contrasted by bold contemporary art, dark wood paneling, and pops of bright colors. Beds come with embroidered sheets, though the mattresses are quite firm. Don't expect much additional seating beyond a single chair in Classic Rooms. Standard features include trays of welcome snacks, espresso machines, electrically operated blackout curtains, air-conditioning, Smart TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. There are spacious closets as well. Higher-category rooms feature extras like small balconies, desks, separate living areas, and the like. Bathrooms are attractive, though the frosted glass doors are a design trend we'd like to see dropped from high-end hotels. Lower-category rooms have rainfall showers with mood-enhancing color LED light panels, plus upmarket bath products. Higher-tier rooms feature bathrooms with separate showers and tubs, and even two-person tubs in the Suite. While rooms on the back of the hotel stay quiet at night, rooms facing the street are likely to pick up some traffic noise (particularly if you try to leave the windows open).

Michelin-star dining and one of the best free breakfasts in Rome

While features are limited at this hotel, its crown jewel is easily All'Oro -- the Michelin-star restaurant helmed by the property's owners. Dinners here are a spectacular affair, with beautiful twists on contemporary Italian fare on offer. You'd be wise to make a reservation well in advance, as the restaurant is popular with locals and other tourists staying in town. Lucky for hotel guests, breakfast is included in all rates and is served in All'Oro as well. This is in no way your typical hotel breakfast, and guests are asked at check-in whether they would prefer sweet or savory dishes, or a combination of both. The hotel can also accommodate dietary restrictions. In the summer months, dining and drinks takes place on the terrace as well. The hotel's art collection is for sale, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
