Bottom Line

The 40-room, luxury Lodge at Sea Island is on the site of a former cotton plantation, accessed via an avenue of historic antebellum oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Outside, the lodge resembles an English manor; inside, it feels like a 1920s-style golf clubhouse or hunting lodge, with personal butlers who deliver milk and cookies to guest rooms at bedtime. Golfers will be in heaven, but there are plenty of non-golf-centric activities, too. Rooms are huge and packed with amenities -- some have balconies with beautiful views of the St. Simons Sound. Listen for the nightly bagpiper who performs at sunset. Guests should note that some features -- such as the beach, spa, and swimming pool -- are located at the sister property, The Cloister, which is too far to walk to; however, there's a free regular shuttle there and back. Families will probably prefer a room at The Cloister so they can access the beach, pool, and family-friendly restaurants without the shuttle ride.

The Lodge at Sea Island

Scene

Very country club vibe that can feel a bit old-fashioned

The Lodge at Sea Island feels less like Georgia and more like Scotland, where golf, shooting, and fine Scotch whiskey are king. The grounds include a spectacular golf course, beautiful wooden pathways through the marshes, and the kinda creepy ruins of a former cotton plantation. At sunset, a bagpiper plays outdoors for an hour as guests enjoy before-dinner drinks on the patio. After dark, fire pits come to life, and guests are invited to make s’mores while stargazing.

The lobby is majestic, done all in wood with antique tables, Oriental rugs, lots of tasteful overstuffed furniture, and huge arched windows with beautiful views. Colt & Alison, the Lodge’s Southern steakhouse, serves breakfast and dinner with a view overlooking the golf course’s 18th hole. Decor includes a wood-burning fireplace, heavy carved chandeliers, and historic golf objects and photographs on the walls. The Oak Room, specializing in shrimp and grits and other Southern favorites, has a handsome dining room with immense oil paintings on the walls, parquet floors, and an encyclopedic array of Scotch. The men’s locker room is the ultimate man cave: Lunch and drinks are served amid the lockers, and there's a cigar room with ocean views and flat-screen TVs for watching sports. Sorry, ladies -- there's nothing comparable in the women's locker room. Most of the guests here are older golfers; families and younger couples (who don't care about golf) should book rooms at The Cloister.
