Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range Mar Brasil is modern (having been updated in 2010), clean, and comfortable, directly across from the beach and 15 minutes south by car from the airport. It is one of Salvador’s best value hotels but not terribly convenient for travelers wanting to explore the historic downtown area, which is about 30 minutes away by car. Still, as former home to poet Vinicius de Moraes, the place has culture and character. The 66 rooms are immaculate and breezy, and there’s also a meeting area for business functions and two swimming pools to appease families and traveling couples wanting a safe and relaxing retreat.

Mar Brasil Hotel

Scene

Green grounds; crisp interiors with marble floors

Resembling a series of condominiums from the outside with a wooden plank roof and ceilings, the Mar Brasil is crisp and clean with modern interiors. Seating is limited in the otherwise spacious and immaculate lobby. White is the overriding element, made less sterile by elegantly speckled, shiny marble floors, silver and red hanging lamps, and unique wooden artwork. The pool areas are relaxing but small. The most beautiful surrounding element of the hotel is on the other side, where a bamboo roof covers the lounge area and an expansive green lawn.

Location

Across from the beach and lighthouse, though a bit of a drive to historic area of city

The beach and Itapuã Lighthouse are just across the street, about a five-minute walk away. Downtown Salvador with its giant elevator and array of historical attractions is not within walking distance, and is about 35 minutes southwest by car or cab. The airport is 15 minutes north by car. The beach near the hotel is not ideal for swimming, but the popular Bora Bora beach is nearby, a short cab ride away.

Rooms

Well-outfitted bright and breezy spaces, with comfy hammocks on balconies

There are 66 guest rooms at the Mar Brasil and, thanks to an update in 2010, they are all clean and modern. The white tile floors and light-colored wood wardrobes, tables, headboards, and desks give rooms a beachy feel, and many have large balconies with sea views and hammocks. Even basic units have free reliable Wi-Fi, safes, hairdryers, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Some spaces are full-blown suites with a kitchenette, lounge area, and dining table. Beds and linens are soft and comfortable, and bathrooms are immaculate with toiletries and glass showers. A standout feature: comfortable hammocks can be found on all room balconies.

Features

Business center, two pools, and restaurant serving lunch and dinner

The Mar Brasil’s bonuses start rolling in right away with free parking and a free breakfast -- a simple buffet of breads and fruit. There’s a business center with ample meeting space, as well as dedicated areas for special events; two swimming pools are surrounded by loungers and umbrella-covered seating in neutral hues; and the restaurant Sirena serves lunch and dinner, indoors or out. Laundry and room service are available upon request. Guest can access free Wi-Fi in the lobby and pool areas, as well as individual rooms and even across the street at the beach.
