Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half pearl Comfort Suites Alamo/Riverwalk is a good budget option for families and couples with cars who don't mind driving to nearby attractions. The Riverwalk may be only three blocks, but it takes about eight minutes of walking through a gritty neighborhood to get to the far end, opposite of where the prettiest parts are located. There's a shuttle to the River Walk, but no return service. Free Wi-Fi, a free hot breakfast, and outdoor swimming pool are great perks for this price point, but expect to pay for parking. Management offers a midweek wine and cheese reception. There's a fitness center and small putting green. Rooms are nicely sized and include small kitchenettes and bathtub/shower combinations.

Comfort Suites Alamo/Riverwalk

Scene

Five-story chain hotel with Spanish architecture

The Comfort Suites Alamo/Riverwalk goes above and beyond the usual generic chain hotel decor with Spanish style accents. The facade includes black wrought iron balconies and white stone work. Guests enter the lobby under an orange tiled porte cochere flanked by palm trees. Inside, a black iron chandelier is accented with artificial candles. A painting of a Spanish hacienda hangs near brown leather furniture clustered around a substantial wooden coffee table. The outdoor swimming pool is narrow, but slender water jets add interest. There are a few cushioned sun loungers and a hot tub.

Location

Next to the expressway in a gritty neighborhood

Technically, the Comfort Suites Alamo/Riverwalk is only three blocks from the picturesque Riverwalk, but it takes a solid eight minutes of walking through a less than ideal neighborhood and under the freeway to get there. It's not as conveniently located as other higher priced hotels, but with a car it's still close to the main tourist attractions. There's a daily charge for parking. The hotel does offer an hourly shuttle to Riverwalk, but it doesn't bring guests back to the hotel and guests must be signed up for it in advance. It doesn't run on Sundays, so a car is really the best bet for getting around San Antonio.

Rooms

Spacious and clean with city views

There are 89 rooms on five floors at The Comfort Suites Alamo/Riverwalk. Each is air-conditioned and includes a microwave, empty mini-fridge, and coffeemaker. A partial wall with an arched shape cutout divides the sitting area from the bedroom. The sitting area includes a floral sleeper sofa, though it's hard to see the flat-screen TV in the bedroom from there. Bathrooms are a nice size with long vanity counters and bathtub/shower combinations. Basic toiletries and shower caps are provided. Some rooms have small, unfurnished balconies overlooking the city. Noise from the nearby expressway is an issue.

Features

Free breakfast, swimming pool, putting green, and wine reception

This hotel has a lot of unexpected and fun features for this price point. Free hot breakfast with patio seating and an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub are great for families. There's a small putting green near the pool, though it's not quite mini-golf. Midweek, the bar area hosts a free wine and cheese reception. The fitness center is small but it has high-quality Precor machines and nice views of the pool. For grabbing snacks and toiletries, check out the small gift shop in the lobby. Two desktop computers and a printer are available for guest use.
