Bottom Line

Capri by the Sea is a high-rise condominium building with privately owned units that are rented as hotel rooms by the management company All Seasons Resort Lodging. As such, the rooms have decor and amenities that vary by owner -- some are in great shape and others are in need of serious housekeeping with outdated furnishings -- but each has a full kitchen and private balcony with ocean views. The on-site amenities are slim outside of the outdoor pool and hot tub, which are a short walk down the road from the condos. The property is located on the boardwalk, which is ideal for families looking to hang out on the beach who don't mind the chance that they'll end up in a less appealing room. (Specific rooms cannot be requested in advance.) Travelers who want to know what they're getting for their buck would be better off springing for the higher rates at the Pacific Terrace Hotel next door, or the considerably cheaper Ocean Park Inn down the street.

Capri by the Sea by All Seasons Resort Lodging

Scene

Dated condos along the beachfront; small and spare lobby area

Crowded with tourists and locals alike hitting the beach, Capri by the Sea is on a street that dead ends at the boardwalk. The lobby is spare with a small seating area right inside the doors. A few potted plants add inviting greenery to the drop ceiling and beige tiled floor. Past the front desk, a mural depicting the beachfront outside covers a neglected wall.

Location

On the boardwalk in San Diego's Pacific Beach neighborhood

Located on the boardwalk at the far north end of San Diego's Pacific Beach Park, Capri by the Sea has direct access to the beach and is within walking distance to the neighborhood's shops and restaurants, including Vanoos Grillette and Enoteca Adriano. Travelers looking to avoid driving can stay local, using the boardwalk (on foot or bicycle) to get to many destinations, including Crystal Pier. Exploring San Diego beyond Pacific Beach is easy enough too; the upscale resort town of La Jolla is eight minutes by car to the north and downtown San Diego is about 20 minutes away. The hotel is 25 minutes northwest from the airport and just a few minutes from the freeway.

Rooms

Individually-owned condos varying widely in quality

Classed as standard or premium, the owner-rented condos all follow the same floor plans but vary in furnishings and amenities. Both categories come as either one- or-two bedrooms, with premiums more modern in their styling, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. The standard suites may have some updates as well, but have a higher chance of being rundown, and thus may feature rusty lamps, dirty carpeting, old bedding, and beat-up cookware. In general, the weekly housekeeping leaves something to be desired and some rooms have a musty odor. All, however, have full kitchens and small private balconies with ocean views.

Features

Outdoor pool down the street, rooftop deck, and direct beach access, along with free parking and Wi-Fi

The best part of Capri by the Sea is its position on the Pacific Beach, which guests can easily access right outside, just across the boardwalk. There’s also a rooftop deck for taking in the view without taking on any sand. Sunbathing loungers and barbecues are available, and though the roof itself is unattractive with very little in terms of inviting decor, the views are incredible. The building's pool and hot tub are only semi-on-site, with a short walk down the street required to enter the enclosed area that thankfully has its own bathrooms. A small laundry room and a trash chute is on every floor of the main property and use of the parking garage is free, as is Wi-Fi.
