Hotel Z - A Staypineapple Hotel is a bright and fun-loving property that was fully renovated in 2015. The turquoise and yellow color scheme extends from the painted building facade to the common areas. In the lobby, a pineapple decal decorates one wall, and staff at two reception desks greet guests. Continuing inside, a tray of pineapple cupcakes sits on a long wooden shelf along with coffee, tea, and a jug of pineapple-flavored water. A cheerful espresso bar serves local pastries, snacks, and various drinks. There are tables and chairs where guests can sit down to have breakfast or a midday treat. Vibrant pottery and succulents decorate tables and bookshelves. There are no other common spaces besides the lobby and bar area. The property tends to host tourists and couples thanks to its Gaslamp Quarter location, but fewer business travelers.

Hotel Z - A Staypineapple Hotel is located in San Diego’s bustling Gaslamp Quarter. The setting is great for tourists who want to explore on foot or by bike. There are numerous restaurants, bars, and other hotels on the surrounding streets. An art gallery is opposite the hotel and there's a CVS drugstore around the corner. Attractions are also within a short walk, including Gaslamp Museum at Davis-Horton House (two minutes), San Diego Chinese Historical Museum (five minutes), and Petco Park, home to the San Diego Padres (10 minutes). The San Diego Convention Center is an eight-minute walk or a four-minute drive from the hotel. San Diego Zoo can be reached in about 10 minutes by car. San Diego International Airport is about a 15-minute drive.

Rooms at Hotel Z are fresh and modern with nice natural light and individually-painted exterior doors that showcase animal or local motifs. Retro-inspired decor in shades of gray and yellow are accented with textured wallpaper, wood-paneled headboards, and graphic art. Beds feature extra-soft The Naked Experience sheets and blankets, including two duvets on each bed. Pineapple-embroidered pillows and the hotel’s stuffed dog mascot also top each bed. Standard amenities include 40-inch flat-screen TVs, bedside iHome Bluetooth docking stations, and free Wi-Fi (extra fee for high-speed). Small desks hold Keurig coffeemakers, free bottled water, and purchasable snack boxes. Note that there are no in-room safes or mini-fridges. King and Queen Rooms are available along with Suites that have sofa beds. Bright white bathrooms with wood and turquoise accents have stall showers with glass doors and wall-mounted Tommy Bahama toiletries. There are pineapple accented robes and slippers. Noise from hallways and nearby rooms can be an issue. While some rooms overlook the city, many face the back of a neighboring building.

The property doesn't have many extra features, since most guests just use it as a base for exploring the Gaslamp Quarter. There is an espresso bar in the lobby serving local pastries and snacks, along with various coffee drinks and pineapple cupcakes. There is no formal breakfast service, pool, restaurant, or fitness center. The hotel offers beach cruisers to borrow, high-speed Wi-Fi, in-room coffee & tea and bottled water (covered in the $20 daily amenity fee). The hotel is pet-friendly and offers special packages for travelers with dogs.
