Bottom Line

For a business hotel, Hyatt Regency La Jolla makes a grand impression in this affluent seaside community. The property has an idyllic outdoor pool area surrounded by cabanas and fire pits. The numerous on-site eateries are pricey, but the Pacific Rim cuisine offered is no ordinary chain hotel grub. The hotel also has two tennis courts and a 24-hour fitness center. The meeting facilities here are busy and even the rooms cater to company travelers, with serious work desks but no balconies or dressers in sight.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine

Scene

Golden Triangle complex with classic, corporate interiors

This 16-story suburban tower is part of the Aventine restaurant and shopping complex in San Diego's Golden Triangle district. With the complex designed by architect Michael Graves, the La Jolla's grounds blend right into the shopping center. The hotel's pink and white marble clad interiors give it a classy, timeless look with welcome accents like mod ottomans and miniature lamps lining the walls. Striped sofas allow guests to get cozy on a wooden enclosed deck. But the hotel’s wide convention-style halls and corporate seminar spaces are decidedly business-oriented and thus may not be ideal for guests looking to indulge in a more playful stay.

Location

Adjacent to the Aventine shopping and restaurant complex

Located right on busy La Jolla Village Drive, Hyatt Regency La Jolla is within walking distance of numerous restaurants in the Aventine complex. The property is also within easy driving distance of La Jolla Shores' shopping, art galleries, and eateries. The University of California at San Diego and Scripps Research Institute are nearby as well. It's a 15- to 20-minute drive south to the downtown San Diego area and 10 minutes southwest to the nearest (La Jolla Shores) beach. Expect 20-minute drives to the San Diego Zoo, the famous Gaslamp Quarter, and San Diego International Airport.

Rooms

Business-oriented units with big flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and work desks

The 417 sparsely decorated rooms here are designed primarily with business travelers in mind. Muted blue and gray tones give a sharp, clean look with some of the most minimalist decor you'll find in a big chain hotel. There are no cabinets or dressers or any drawers to speak of; in fact, standard rooms have little furniture beside thatched suitcase benches and dedicated work desks with accompanying ergonomic roller chairs. Bedside tables and floating shelves provide extra spaces for belongings. Some king-sized bed rooms add single sitting chairs and all units have flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and coffeemakers. Mini-fridges are absent, but may be available upon request. Updated bathrooms have either shower/tub combos or walk-in showers, both with rainfall showerheads and colorful, iridescent tiles that add welcome sparkle.

Features

Large outdoor pool, fitness center, and expansive meeting spaces

The hotel's most leisurely spot is its outdoor pool area with a whirlpool and junior Olympic-sized heated pool surrounded by sun loungers and cabanas that have their own ceiling fans. More outdoor lounge spaces with sculptural fire pits sprawl out from there. Inside, the hotel has a 1,300-square-foot fitness center, with Life Fitness cardio and strength equipment and an outdoor area for yoga and stretching. The facility is free for guests and open 24-hours. Two tennis courts are also on hand.

As a business seminar and conference center, the hotel has 42,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space that include two huge ballrooms, the largest of which can hold up to 500 people. A 24-hour business center has four computers with printers and free Internet -- the only guaranteed free web access here, as Wi-Fi requires a fee.

Multiple on-site dining options along with an exclusive lounge

The La Jolla has several on-site dining options, with even more eateries found at the adjacent restaurant complex. The hotel's own Barcino Grill covers American standards and offers a breakfast buffet, while Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse does traditional cuts and seafood. The well-regarded Cafe Japengo wins consistent awards for its interesting mix of Pacific Rim cuisine and sushi. A dedicated watering hole, Michael’s Lounge, has a full bar, pool tables, and outdoor patio seating. For java and quick to-go options, the general store serves Starbucks coffee along with sandwiches and snacks. Finally, the Hyatt's Regency Club is an upper-floor concierge lounge that serves continental breakfast and evening snacks, but it's only for members or upgraded guests.
