Bottom Line

With its position overlooking the beach in San Diego's Pacific Beach neighborhood, the Pacific Terrace Hotel has excellent views of the ocean. Rooms are large with heavy wood furniture, private balconies or patios, and most have lovely ocean views. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance, and the boardwalk runs along the hotel's back door. Sunsets over the Pacific come with a cost -- resort fees and parking charges add quickly on top of already high rates. The non-view rooms are considerably cheaper, but for room rates in a similar range some travelers may find more amenities nearby at the considerably more posh, Tower 23 Hotel.

Pacific Terrace Hotel

Scene

Tropical hotel on San Diego's Pacific Beach

Jewel-encrusted golden animal statues hint at the far east upon entering the lobby of the Pacific Terrace Hotel where plantation shutters and tropical decor invoke an island setting. A live cam of the beach plays on a flat-screen monitor on the wall offering sneak peaks of the hotel's main attraction. Rattan fans and wood furnishings pair oddly with granite counter tops throughout the hotel, but the rooms are more cohesive. It's a relatively mellow spot off the beach, however it sits in a busy neighborhood with the sound of the ocean only drowning out some of the traffic.

Location

Center of San Diego's Pacific Beach neighborhood

Rising off the boardwalk at the north end of San Diego's Pacific Beach Park, The Pacific Terrace Hotel has a prime location on the ocean and is walking distance to the neighborhood's shops and restaurants. Travelers looking to avoid driving can stay local with direct access the beach, and traveling the boardwalk by foot or bicycle to many destinations. Exploring San Diego beyond Pacific Beach is easy enough too; the upscale resort town of La Jolla is just eight minutes by car to the north and downtown San Diego is about 20 minutes away. The hotel is 25 minutes from the airport and just a few minutes from the 5 freeway.

Rooms

Large rooms with heavy wooden furniture and island decor

Heavy wooden furniture, including Tommy Bahama carved bed frames with leather inlaid headboards and windows covered by plantation shutters, create a Tropical island theme with a colonial flair. A wooden drop ceiling adds a subtle touch of class in the entryway, which opens to a higher white-painted ceiling in the large rooms. The marble and granite bathrooms have a separate sink/vanity area. The balconies or patios are private and most open to the ocean, providing great spots to watch the Pacific sunset. Some rooms have kitchenettes and all have large wall safes, iPod docks, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers (single-serve pod).

Features

Easy beach access with bicycle and water sport rentals

The outdoor sundeck is right off the boardwalk with its pool, hot tub, and cabanas overlooking the beach. Beach chairs, umbrellas, and water sports equipment like boogie boards are available at a first come basis. Bicycles are also available for rental (included with Wi-Fi in the resort fee). The Caribbean Room provides a standard breakfast buffet, but serves as just a lounge for the rest of the day, with only room service available (they also do poolside). In the absence of a full restaurant, the hotel provides a "charge back" convenience at several local eateries, allowing you to charge the bill to your hotel room. The fitness center is small and there's no spa, but a small on-site massage studio (as well as in-room services) are available with advance reservations. The hotel's 900 square-foot meeting space comes with an adjacent kitchen. Parking on the surrounding neighborhood street gets filled up fast so on-site underground parking is available for a daily charge.
