Bottom Line

The Wyndham Garden is a low-rise property located in San Diego's Midway District, a 15-minute drive to the airport. While the colonial-style architecture and abundance of tropical plants is pleasant, the overall feel is more that of a budget motel than a proper hotel, owing to tired room decor and musty bathrooms. The pool area and 24-hour restaurant and bakery are nice enough, though ultimately there's not much to make this property stand out beyond its close proximity to the Valley View Casino Center and SeaWorld.

Wyndham Garden San Diego Near SeaWorld

Scene

Old Spanish-style motel lined with an abundance of palms

Built in the early 1980s in the Old Spanish style popular in the region, the Wyndham Garden San Diego is a hotel that's similar to a roadside motel, but without the free parking. Rooms are spread across five two-story buildings surrounded by hundreds of palm trees and tropical plants. It has a Spanish Colonial look, but the large parking lot and general lackluster decor quality detracts from this effect. The high-ceilinged lobby, however, is a pleasant and well-maintained space, with plenty of soft seating and huge windows providing lots of natural light. Guests are a mix of tourists in town for the nearby attractions as well as business travelers and performers -- especially from the Cirque du Soleil -- who frequent the nearby Valley View Casino Center.

Location

Set on busy road in San Diego's Midway District near SeaWorld

The hotel is located on a busy street in the north of San Diego's Midway District and is surrounded by fast-food restaurants, local businesses, and budget hotels. While there are plenty of shops and eateries within walking distance, the area isn't particularly pedestrian-friendly. The Valley View Casino Center, however, is just minutes away on foot and SeaWorld is under a five-minute drive from the hotel. Old Town San Diego is also just a five-minute drive away, while San Diego International Airport takes no more than 15 minutes to reach by car.

Rooms

Worn, uninspired rooms with free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with HBO

The hotel has 316 rooms, all of which are decorated in standard motel-styling, with patterned fabrics, modern wooden furnishings, and -- in most -- a few signs of wear and tear. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, and 32-inch flat-screen TVs with cable channels (including HBO). Some also come with mini-fridges and microwaves, while the Family Suites include bunk beds for kids. While bathrooms are generally clean and well-maintained, some are musty and appear in need of a refresh.

Features

Heated swimming pool, hot tub, and 24-hour on-site bakery

The hotel has a small, triangular pool and a hot tub in an outdoor area with a few lounge chairs. The hotel's Du-par's Restaurant & Bakery is open 24 hours and specializes in fresh baked good and breakfast items, though note that breakfast is not included in room rates. While Wi-Fi is free of charge throughout the signal is reportedly patchy in places. There's also lots of space for parking, but it costs extra.
