Bottom Line

Possibly the best value of any hotel in San Francisco’s Marina District, this 69-room inn is geared toward the budget traveler with a car who wants to be away from downtown and near the waterfront. The Golden Gate Bridge is also easily accessible from this busy neighborhood, which offers plenty of restaurants and bars. There isn’t much to the hotel – no lobby lounge or restaurant -- but there is free covered parking, and guest rooms are clean and bright with comfy beds, though dated decor.

Oyster Hotel Review

Coventry Motor Inn

Scene

No scene to speak of, just a wood-paneled reception area inside the parking garage

This hotel is part of several sister properties around the city, and they are similarly designed. This Victorian-style building combines red-brick with brown vinyl siding, and dormer windows trimmed in cream and red paint. An old-fashioned motor inn sign hangs off the side of the building, and attractive, cream-colored columns flank the entrance to the parking garage. The lobby and reception are inside the parking garage, giving the place a feel that is more commercial-industrial than quaint or neighborhood-y. While there are large windows and charming, historic photos on the walls, the lobby's wood-paneling, maroon carpeting, and dark leather couches are dated and drab. Guests are mainly tourists who spend their days and nights out exploring San Francisco, so the lack of comfortable lounge space isn't really an issue. There is nothing particularly musty about the property, but hallways are dark and nondescript.

Location

In Marina District on busy Lombard Street, five blocks from the waterfront

The inn is located in San Francisco’s Marina District on Lombard Street, the main thoroughfare cutting across the city. The only forms of public transportation linking the Marina area to the rest of the city are buses and cabs, though there's much to do within walking distance. Restaurants, bars, and tourist shops are all around, as the property is two blocks from Chestnut Street and three blocks from Union Street, two commercial centers of activity. The waterfront is just five blocks away, and the Marina is about 10 minutes' walk. Ghiradelli Square is under 20 minutes away on foot, and guests can reach Presidio Heights in 10 minutes by car. San Francisco International Airport is about a 30-minute drive in no traffic, or about one hour and 15 minutes by bus.

Rooms

Old upholstery and furniture, but clean with huge windows

Rooms are a little dated, though are clean and have comfy beds, along with large windows along one wall. Decor includes maroon carpeting, ill-matching bed accessories in dark autumnal tones, along with heavy wooden headboards, dressers, and nightstands. Each room has a small dining table, 42-inch flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi access, modern heating and air-conditioning unit, and small coffeemaker. Bathrooms also look aged, with yellow wallpaper and some mildew stains on the white floor tiles; each is clean and decently sized, with a shower/tub combo. Some rooms get street noise -- particularly those on lower floors.
