Rooms a bit dated
One of Kimpton’s more traditional properties, this comfortable boutique hotel is in a 1913 building one block from Union Square. The Prescott has the signature Kimpton amenities, including an evening wine hour and free morning coffee and tea, but the rooms are in need of a refresh. The Club Level, which occupies the top floors of an adjacent historic building, the former Press Club of San Francisco, has upgrades, including access to a posh lounge and free breakfast. It’s worth comparing rates with the Clift or the Kensington Park Hotel, where better rooms are usually cheaper. THE PRESCOTT HOTEL HAS CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS AND WILL RE-OPEN AS HOTEL ZEPPELIN IN SPRING OF 2016.
Simple and classy decor throughout and a smart Club Level lounge
Unlike many other hotels operated by Kimpton, such as the quirky Triton, the Prescott aims for understated class. The cozy "living room" off the lobby, which hosts the evening wine hour, has armchairs clustered around a brick fireplace (though the decor and purple and green color scheme might remind you of a Panera Bread). The Club Level lounge is more sophisticated, with muted purples and golds.
The Prescott is a block and a half from both Union Square and the Mason/Powell cable car, which runs to Fisherman's Wharf in about 20 minutes. The Powell Street BART station is a 10-minute walk away. It’s also a 15-minute walk to Chinatown and a 25-minute walk to the Ferry Building Marketplace.
The standard rooms are aiming for understated elegance, but they’re small and worn, filled with bland decor, and in need of a renovation. Club Level rooms are not much better, but come with access to the Club Level lounge, where a free breakfast and evening appetizers are offered. All rooms include flat-screen TVs, minibars and safes, as well as Kimpton's signature animal print robes. There's free Wi-Fi for guests who sign up for Kimpton InTouch Rewards. Small bathrooms have marble countertops and curtained showers. There is some traffic noise in rooms facing the street. The Penthouse Suites have more attractive living areas with fireplaces.
Postrio restaurant, free wine hour, and a Club Level Lounge
The hotel serves breakfast via room service and bar drinks in the afternoon. There's free coffee and tea in the morning and a free wine hour in the lobby living room. Club Level guests also get an evening cocktail reception with cheeses and pizzas in the lounge and a free extended continental breakfast. The hotel is very pet-friendly and there are free cruiser bikes to borrow. Valet parking is available, but it's pricey, though there's a discount on hybrid cars. The hotel offers a free sedan service in the downtown area weekday mornings. There's a small fitness center and a few computers in the lounge off the lobby. The “Forgot It? We've Got It!" program has essential travel items guests may have forgotten, such as toothbrushes and curling irons. In-room spa services are available.
