Bottom Line

The mid-range Villas de Santa Fe is sought after for its proximity to Santa Fe Plaza and convenience of its apartments, despite limited facilities and underwhelming decor. The 105 rooms are all apartments featuring living spaces, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, and full kitchens that include microwaves, coffeemakers, and dishwashers. Wi-Fi is provided as part of the daily resort fee. Two hot tubs and a pool offer space to relax, and there are community barbecue grills to aid in cooking larger meals -- helpful, since rooms lack ovens. Compare rates with Hotel Chimayo de Santa Fe, which is steps from the plaza and has charming decor, but no pool or fitness center.

Villas de Santa Fe

Scene

Quiet hotel close to downtown with convenient apartments and a cozy lobby

Three adobe buildings with turquoise trim distinguish the Villas de Santa Fe complex. One building is across the street, with its own parking lot and hot tub. Grounds are limited -- trees and bushes line the streets, one building has a small grassy lawn, and functional pool terraces are kept neat. Inside the lobby, bright colors and patterns are in line with Santa Fe style, plus Native American rugs and artwork adorn walls, while pillows and area rugs continue the theme and local artifacts add decorative touches. Cushy brown leather sofas and chairs are set around a fireplace where guests can sip the coffee and tea on offer. Unfortunately, this Southwestern style doesn't extend to the rooms. This hotel appeals to many couples and occasional families who appreciate the apartment conveniences and proximity to Santa Fe’s shopping and sights.

Location

In a residential area, a 10-minute walk from Santa Fe Plaza

This hotel is just off a main road and within walking distance of the popular, central Santa Fe Plaza. It is in a residential area and there isn’t much immediately nearby, but a 10-minute walk will bring guests to a plethora of shops, art galleries, and museums. It is a seven-minute walk to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, nine minutes to the New Mexico Museum of Art, and 10 minutes to the Palace of the Governor’s Museum. The Plaza is a 10-minute walk away, and is surrounded by high-end shops and many restaurants. The area is also full of art galleries, but Canyon Road has many more -- over 100 -- and it's a five-minute drive away. There is a bus stop where several different lines stop a 10-minute walk away. Those looking for skiing or nature trails can head up the mountains to Ski Santa Fe, a 30-minute drive from the hotel. Santa Fe Municipal Airport is a 20-minute drive away, and Albuquerque International Sunport is a 65-minute drive.

Rooms

Generic but comfortable apartments with full kitchens

Standard One-Bedroom Apartments are warm and homey, but there’s little to suggest local style. A few orange accents brighten the otherwise neutral space containing traditional furnishings. The convenience of an apartment is here though, with full kitchens, living areas, and separate bedrooms. Bedrooms have double or king-size beds and pullout sofas in the living rooms. Two-bedroom, two-bathroom units are also available. Some apartments have a furnished balcony or patio, but not all. Kitchen appliances include a full-size refrigerator, dishwasher, stovetop, microwave, and coffeemaker, but no oven. Each room also have a flat-screen TV, DVD player, iron, and safe. A sink and vanity are open to the bedroom, and there is a door into the bath area. Bathrooms are simple and clean, each outfitted with a tiled shower/tub combo behind a curtain. A hairdryer and range of free toiletries are provided.

Features

Heated outdoor pool, two hot tubs, a fitness room, outdoor grills, and Wi-Fi

Facilities here are modest, but there are a few extras to enjoy. The outdoor pool is heated, and a small hot tub shares the patio. A few loungers and tables under umbrellas dot the terrace. The space is between the parking lot and a busy road, with just a few trees to screen against traffic. Another patio has a second hot tub and two grills for guest use, plus more loungers and tables. It is a pleasant and quieter evening hangout spot.

The fitness room has cardio and weight-training equipment, though some machines are tightly packed despite the space. A game room houses a pool table, some puzzles, and board games. The business center consists of a couple of computers and a printer in a nook off the lobby, and Wi-Fi is included in the resort fee, which is charged nightly.
