Bottom Line

This upscale high-rise hotel is located just four blocks from Santa Monica beach, and some rooms feature balconies with ocean views. The 310 guest rooms and suites have eclectic and fashionable decor, plus amenities such as flat-screen TVs, in-room movies, and mini-fridges, but no coffee- and tea-making facilities. There's a fee for breakfast, and a daily resort fee is billed for the use of the heated outdoor pool and 24-hour fitness center. Other on-site features include a restaurant, a lobby bar, and a game room. Despite extra fees, rates here are cheaper than other local hotels. However, travelers may want to consider Hotel Shangri La Santa Monica for its Art Deco interiors and secluded pool and lounge area.

Le Meridien Delfina Santa Monica

Scene

Attractive multi-story hotel popular with business and leisure travelers

Le Meridien Delfina Santa Monica is a multi-story hotel located on a street corner, with an ocean-view wing facing toward Santa Monica beach and the water. The hotel was built in 1984 and last renovated in 2006; it's retained a fresh, fashionable, and well-maintained look. The lobby area features hardwood floors and wood-paneled walls, giving the space a cozy atmosphere. Globe pendant lights hang above velvety blue armchairs, and long rectangular couches, including one in a Marimekko-style print, give a dose of midcentury cool to the space. The property is popular with both business and leisure travelers, as well as families.

Rooms

Comfortable guests rooms decorated in an eclectic style with midcentury touches

The guest rooms and suites at Le Meridien Delfina Santa Monica are decorated in an eclectic, contemporary style with a bold mix of patterns. Coffee-brown pinstriped carpets meet walls in lilac chainlink wallpaper. Flashy details like tall white leather headboards, mirrored tables, and arc lights add a heavy splash of glamor. And even the throw pillows and mirrors are bordered in thick stripes. But some of the mix of color and pattern doesn't blend in full harmony, such as the teal floral-print curtains. Turquoise velour armchairs paired with beige ottomans provide seating, and vintage black-and-white beach pictures provide a retro beachy detail.

All the rooms feature air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, in-room movies, irons and ironing boards, safes, and mini-fridges -- but no coffee- and tea-making facilities. Bathrooms feature luxurious white-marble floors and white-and-teal patterned wallpaper. They're equipped with shower/tub combos, magnifying mirrors, and hairdryers. Some rooms have private balconies with ocean views, while other have partial ocean views or views of the mountains or the swimming pool. Four of the suites have the extra luxury of each having a terrace with a whirlpool bathtub.

Restaurant and bar, outdoor pool, game room, and fitness center

This upscale hotel offers several extra on-site features to its guests, though its lacking a spa. While the outdoor heated pool is smallish and ill suited for lap swimming, it'll do for a dip. The pool area has several lounge chairs and a few cabanas where guests can relax in the sun. The fitness center is open 24 hours and features a good range of equipment, including several treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, weight machines, and free weights. SandBox -- the hotel's game room and recreational area -- features a pool table, a dart board, the latest gaming systems, shuffleboard, and big-screen TVs. Access is by prior reservation only.

Located just off the lobby area, the Longitude Bar + Restaurant is open for breakfast (not included in room rates), lunch, and dinner. The bar menu features craft beers, as well as a selection of cocktails and wine. The hotel also has over 10,000 square feet of banquet and events space, including the Penthouse Ballroom, with scenic views of the California coastline, mountains, and Santa Monica. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, but access is free only for SPG members booking on Starwood websites -- others are required to pay a daily fee. However, all guests can use the internet for free at the hotel's workstation with two computers and a printer.

Note that guests are charged a daily resort fee on top of their bill that includes use of the on-site features, as well as valet parking, bicycle rentals, and beach towels. Pets are welcome for a fee.
