Bottom Line

Above Blue Suites is an excellent four-pearl choice in the quiet and scenic village of Imerovigli. The village has the same stunning caldera and Aegean Sea views as neighboring Fira (a 20-minute walk) and popular Oia (a 20-minute drive), but Imerovigli is one of the quieter spots on the cliffs. The boutique hotel offers 10 individually decorated cave-style suites and all have private or semi-private terraces that face the water. Some upgrade to indoor or outdoor whirlpools. There's a chic pool and deck lined with sun loungers -- this is where candlelit dinners can be arranged in the evenings. Free hot breakfast is delivered to rooms every morning, which feels luxurious. As a cheaper alternative with the same views and a free continental breakfast, check rates at Prekas Apartments

Above Blue Suites

Scene

Quiet and romantic boutique hotel overlooking the caldera

Above Blue Suites was carefully designed so that the suites and public areas overlook the jaw dropping sunset views on the caldera. The Cycladic architecture is whitewashed in fresh paint and accented with the expected shade of soft blue. Steep steps lead from the top of the property down the cliff to the rooms, and end at the chic swimming pool deck. This is also where candlelit dinners are served in the evenings. The hotel mostly attracts international couples on their honeymoons, and due to the small size of the hotel, the pool doesn't get too crowded. Most guests spend their days exploring Santorini's wineries, beaches, and restaurants.

Location

1,300 feet above the Aegean Sea on the caldera in Imerovigli village

Imerovigli village offers the best of both worlds in Santorini. It has all the breathtaking caldera views for which the island is famous, and isn't as crowded as neighboring Fira and the ultra popular Oia. From the hotel, there are a few nice restaurants within a five-minute walk: Avocado, Le Moustache, and Mezzo Restaurant are all worth a visit. For more restaurant and shop options, it's a 20-minute walk to Fira along the pedestrian path that snakes along the caldera. The path is lined with souvenir shops on one side and picturesque views on the other. Walking the opposite direction away from Fira will take you to Oia, and though the walk is gorgeous (and a popular activity) the path does get steep and rocky in some areas. Less intrepid travelers can also take the bus or drive to Oia in about 20 minutes. It's a 20-minute drive to Santos Winery and 30 minutes to Red Beach. The ferry port is in Fira and it's a 15-minute drive to the Santorini International Airport.

Rooms

Cave-style suites with private or semi-private terraces and some whirlpool tubs

Each of the 10 cave-style suites are built directly in to the cliffs, which means they all have an individual layout and design. Some are much larger than others, and though all have furnished terraces that face the caldera, some outdoor spaces aren't entirely private -- one suite's sitting area is right on the pool deck. All are decorated with attention to quality fabrics and art. The Felicity Suite has a mostly white color palette and modern touches like silver lamps and a ghost chair in front of the vanity. Each suite is air-conditioned and comes with a flat-screen TV, Samsung speakers, mini-fridge with drinks and snacks, telephone, safe, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms have beautiful Venetian tiles and glass mosaics. Some feature large, lovely showers with blue tiles, while others have indoor or outdoor whirlpools. Toiletries, hairdryers, and slippers are provided. Honeymooners should note that staff often scatters rose petals on the bed and provides sparkling wine. Past guests have reported occasional cookies left by turndown service.

Free hot breakfast, chic pool, and candlelit dinners

Due to space constraints, Above Blue Suites doesn't offer tons of features, but what is on offer is upscale and nicely done. Room rates include a free, hot breakfast. Guests make their selections the evening before and choose a delivery time. Drinks are available by the pool throughout the day. With advance notice, staff can arrange a candlelit dinner on the pool deck in the evenings. The communal pool is large for a cliff-facing hotel, and the surrounding pool deck is set with white sun loungers and a handful of tables and chairs. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Staff can assist with luggage, tour bookings, and directions. Many guests opt for a private transfer, and the nearest parking lot is off of the village square.
