Bottom Line

The mid-range Hotel Pedraladda is a peaceful seaside property on the Gulf of Asinara in northern Sardinia. An outdoor terrace with a pool, kiddy pool, and bar seating is the nicest spot at the hotel, providing a gorgeous view of the bay and Castelsardo’s castle. The 112 rooms are basic and decorated in typical Sardinian style, offering flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free safes. Couples enjoy the casual atmosphere within walking distance of sights, while entertainment and a mini-club make this a decent pick for families. The beach's small size and rocky shore is a letdown for many, though there's a shuttle service to sandier shores. For comparison, Castelsardo Resort Village is a cheery hotel next to a gorgeous beach, but it has an isolated setting farther from the city.

Hotel Pedraladda

Scene

Dated but well-kept property with gorgeous views of the sea and Castelsardo’s hilltop castle

The property is clean and well-maintained, outfitted in a traditional Sardinian style that could use a refresh. Teal tile in the lobby shows its age and the wood laminate front desk looks old. Seating areas consist of wicker tables and chairs, and there are a few paintings on the yellow walls, but the room lacks cohesion and style. Outside, the grounds are limited, but a lovely courtyard with flowers and palm trees welcomes guests, and there’s a pool terrace with a casual atmosphere. Despite the need for an update, the hotel is a decent option and the cliffside location offers gorgeous sea views from many areas. Guests are largely couples and some families, most of whom find their stays satisfactory, but look for improvements like fewer charges and a pool that's open all day.

Location

15-minute walk from Castelsardo’s sights on the northern coast of Italy’s Sardinia island

Hotel Pedraladda is just to the east of the hilltop of Castelsardo, a beautiful town on the northern coast of Italy’s Sardinia Island. The hotel is on a small coastal road on a cliff offering gorgeous views of the Gulf of Asinara. There’s not much in the immediate surrounds, but the hotel offers a shuttle to nearby beaches. From the hotel, it is an eight-minute walk to the main road, and a 15-minute walk to a busier area with restaurants and shops. The hotel is a 20-minute walk, or a seven-minute drive from the top of the hill in Castelsardo, where the cathedral and gardens make for a lovely visit. The town itself is a beautiful place to walk and explore, with its medieval architecture, Italian charm, and stunning views. The marina at Castelsardo is an eight-minute drive from the hotel. Many cruise lines come into Porto Torres, a 45-minute drive from the hotel. The nearest airport is Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, an hour and 45 minutes from the hotel by car.

Rooms

Traditionally styled rooms with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free safes

Simple, clean rooms are decorated in a traditional Sardinian style that's pleasant, though on the dated side. Decor usually consists of terra-cotta tiling, ivory walls, and turquoise-painted wood furniture, plus embroidered white linens. Two twin beds can be pushed together for a double, and a third bed may be added for an extra guest. Some rooms have a sitting area, as well. All have a mini-fridge, free safe, and flat-screen TV with satellite channels, but there’s no kettle. Balconies and terraces are often shared, making it difficult to leave the door open for fresh air, and many of those on the back of the building sit tight against a stone wall. Bathrooms are likewise basic but clean. They have a shower stall with a door and some add a bidet. A hairdryer and free soaps are provided.

Features

Buffet breakfast and dinner, nice pool with wading section, and a mini-club

Simple amenities provide meals and relaxation. The main restaurant is good with a free breakfast included and a half-board option available for dinner. Buffet-style meals include local and Mediterranean cuisine, plus regular theme nights. An a al carte eatery, open in the peak season only, serves romantic meals on a terrace with a gorgeous sea view. The main bar offers snacks and drinks throughout the day.

The pool is a nice spot with a few palm trees and a view of the sea, but the space lacks personality. The terra-cotta patio has beige loungers and a few umbrellas, all clean and well-kept. There are no stairs into the pool, only ladders, but a small wading pool makes it easier for kids to enjoy the water. The beach is accessible through an underpass and down a dirt trail, which could be difficult for those with mobility issues to reach. It is small and rocky -- not a good place to spend a day with kids -- but a pretty spot with a private feel, thanks to the cliffs on all sides.

Entertainment for both kids and adults is provided in the form of dancing and music, as well as activities at the mini-club. The hotel does not have a fitness room or spa facilities. Wi-Fi is free in the lobby, but there’s a charge to access it in rooms.
