Bottom Line

Located in a secluded area of northern Sardinia, the mid-range Hotel Residence Baiaverde is a traditional, old-fashioned resort for families seeking a quiet, good-value-for-money place by the beach. It offers guests a choice of 137 suites or cabins with cooking facilities (not all of which are air-conditioned), as well as a range of summer camp-style activities (archery, swimming lessons, etc.). Food, like the rooms, is simple but good, and though the property is dated, it's mostly well-maintained. There's not much in the immediate area, but there are several historic sights within driving distance. Those looking for something a little less sleepy might try the three-pearl Marmorata Village, which offers all-inclusive options and more activities.

Scene

Very traditional resort that caters to families

Surrounded by old pine and juniper trees, and laid out like a small campus, the hotel's guest units connect to the rest of the property via a network of paths. The grounds are well-maintained and feature a big lap pool, though many guest head to a nearby beach (about a five-minute walk from the property) that offers sun loungers and umbrellas for free. On the downside, the decor throughout is not just traditional, but dated, with unattractive checkered chairs and wood furniture decorating the lobby, and metal dining tables topped with plain-red and tattersall cloths. The hotel appeals to and largely targets families looking for quiet holiday.

Location

Secluded, but close to beach and a larger town

Hotel Residence Baiaverde is somewhat remote, but there are still quiet places to explore in the vicinity, including a beach just five minutes away on foot. The village itself is an "area of community importance," which means it's protected and full of nature. Beyond great trails, guests can also explore the area via bicycle rental and horseback riding -- both can be arranged through the hotel. Valledoria is the closest town, about eight minutes away by car, and it has several shops and restaurants. Castelsardo, a village dating back to the medieval times, is about 15 minutes by road; the pink cliffs of Isola Rossa and Costa Paradiso are about 30 minutes away; and the blue water of Stintino and Santa Teresa di Gallura are about an hour away. The hotel is about an hour by taxi from the airports in Alghero and Olbia, and 40 minutes from Porto Torres.

Rooms

Rooms aren't stylish, but they're well-maintained and have stovetops.

The hotel's 137 units are simple and dated -- almost monastery-like in the plainness of their decor -- though well-maintained for not having been renovated since 2003. They're split between hotel-style suites and apartments. The suites are located in attached houses, and their living rooms include a sofa bed, meaning each unit can sleep up to four, plus a tiny kitchenette with a two-burner stove and sink. Apartments come with a larger kitchenette, dining table, and furnished patio or balcony. Guests should know that not all of the units have air-conditioning, but shade from the trees helps. Bathrooms come with very basic toiletries and a small walk-in shower.

Features

Family-friendly offerings include pizza eatery, archery, and lap pool

There's a pizzeria in the main building, a casual cafe on the square, and a main restaurant on-site with a variety of dishes. The window for breakfast is only two hours, and if a guest isn't on a half- or full-board plan, it's not included in the rate (it's a bit on the expensive side). Babysitting is available at during mealtimes. The main lap pool is large and well-maintained, and surrounded by plastic loungers and umbrellas. For kids, there are a playground, evening entertainment (the mini-disco is popular), and separate pool. A bocce court, darts, and ping-pong are available for free, as are Pilates, spinning, archery, aqua aerobics, and swimming lessons. There's a small convenience store and laundry facilities on-site. Wi-Fi is only available for free in the lobby; in rooms, it's only available in Superior units for a charge. Parking is available for free.
