Bottom Line

The 36-room La Vecchia Fonte Hotel is a mid-range property with a convenient location facing the harbor in the small town of Palau. Though there's little to do on-site, plenty of restaurants, bars, and sea activities can be found nearby. Quality antique furnishings throughout give the hotel an Old-World elegance, and rooms are outfitted with charming decor, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Drawbacks, however, are the lack of a swimming pool, gym, and small balconies in most of the rooms. There's also no lunch or dinner service, but the dining room serves a free breakfast spread and cocktails. Travelers may want to check out the Hotel Palau, which has a pool, massage services, and dinner menu, but it's father from the water.

La Vecchia Fonte Hotel

Scene

Elegant and quiet with hand-painted antique furnishings

La Vecchia Fonte Hotel stands out for its antique flair and rustic elegance, plus its proximity to the harbor. Warm antique wooden furniture (many of which is hand-painted) and vintage nautical works of art line the lobby and public areas, as well as the rooms. Common areas are few, but there is a breakfast room with exposed wooden beams and a large artwork of a ship propped on an easel; chairs covered with fabric give it an old-fashioned, if a bit frumpy, feel. The bar's outdoor terrace has a more modern design with terra-cotta tiling, wicker seating, and pretty potted plants. The lack of facilities and charming decor primarily draw couples, so families should probably look elsewhere.

Location

Harborside hotel near plenty of restaurant and bars

La Vecchia Fonte Hotel is located near the marina in the town of Palau, on the northeast coast of Sardinia. It's a five-minute walk from the Isola Maddalena ferries, making it a great central location for island exploring. Recreational and sightseeing activities such as scuba diving and boating excursions are just a few minutes' walk from the hotel, as are restaurants and bars. Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is roughly a 50-minute drive from the hotel, and the hotel offers assistance with airport transportation. Although the hotel is by the harbor instead of the beach, the Spiaggia di Porto Faro beach is only an eight-minute walk away.

Rooms

Spacious rooms and bathrooms, antique furnishings, and small balconies

La Vecchia Fonte Hotel has 34 rooms and two suites, outfitted in charming, classic Sardinian style. Rooms have a warm, elegant look thanks to antique wood furniture, terra-cotta tiling, sponge-effect walls, and cream quilts with blue embroidery detail. Antique prints hang on the walls and rooms have either benches or comfy armchairs. Most rooms have small Juliet balconies, though some have larger furnished terraces -- the Royal Suite's also has an outdoor whirlpool. Though some rooms have views of the harbor, they're hindered by a big parking lot. Standard amenities include small flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, air-conditioning, safes, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Attractive bathrooms have showers or shower/tub combos, bidets, hairdryers, and toiletries.

Features

Free breakfast and Wi-Fi, but little else

There's little on-site -- no swimming pool, gym, or full restaurant -- but there is a dining room serving free, varied continental breakfasts. A bar is also available for coffee and cocktails, plus it has a piano for entertainment purposes. There are plenty of water and land activities to experience outside the hotel, and the hotel offers car, scooter, bike, and boat rentals to assist with that. Wi-Fi is free throughout and pets are allowed for a fee.
