Villa Las Tronas Hotel & Spa

Alghero, Sardinia

Perched on a promontory that juts out into the sea, the five-pearl Villa Las Tronas Hotel & Spa has an exceptional location that is close to both the beach and the dining spots and tourist attractions of Alghero. The property is housed in a former hunting lodge and residence for Italian nobility, and it's a historic attraction unto itself, surrounded by lovely gardens, and filled with period antiques. The 24 guest rooms are individually decorated with period furnishings and antiques. Most rooms have marble, stone, or wood flooring, with millwork and decorative molding. Despite the classic style and architectural appeal, some of the standard rooms are stuffy and underwhelming. For dining, the hotel has a classy restaurant and bar with a sea-facing terrace and live piano music in the evening. Additional features include saltwater pools, a full spa, and an Old World game room. Oh, and a helipad.

Hotel Pitrizza, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Costa Smeralda

Porto Cervo, Arzachena, Sardinia

The 65-room Hotel Pitrizza is a polished, authentic Costa Smeralda hotel with exceptional bay views throughout. The tranquil hotel is right on the beach, a 10-minute drive to Porto Cervo. Bright and elegant Sardinian rooms have marble bathrooms, minibars, robes, and flat-screen TVs; some come with private pools and hot tubs and 24-hour butler service. Every room at Pitrizza has a furnished terrace -- a big perk over the rooms at Villas Las Tronas, where only upgraded rooms have balconies. Room service here is available around the clock. A carved-rock infinity pool, a Sardinian/Mediterranean fine-dining restaurant, and an exceptional beach with lounge chairs and palapa umbrellas are the hotel's most notable features. A continental breakfast buffet is included in room rates, and full- or half-board options are available.

3

L’ea Bianca Luxury Resort

Baia Sardinia, Arzachena, Sardinia

L’ea Bianca Luxury Resort is a secluded four-and-a-half-pearl property with direct access to a beach with soft red sand, loungers, and umbrellas. The 31 elegant rooms are spacious and bright; they come with bathrobes, minibars, and terraces overlooking the sea. Five private villas have traditional, rustic furnishings, kitchens, and at least two bedrooms. The hotel's large outdoor pool is set in a pretty terrace overlooking the sea and there is also a rooftop solarium with panoramic views. A well-reviewed restaurant serves Mediterranean and international cuisine. L'ea Bianca has room service, but it does not run 24 hours, like Hotel Pitrizza's.

4

La Villa del Re – Adults Only Hotel

Castiadas, Sardinia

One look at Hotel La Villa del Re, and there's no doubt that this is a luxury property. The beachfront hotel looks like a Sardinian castle and its roster of high-end features ensure its spot as one of the island's most luxurious hotels. La Villa del Re's infinity pool has an outdoor pool bar and provides ocean views, and its elegant restaurant has outdoor seating, a Mediterranean menu, and a dress code. A free afternoon tea with a rich dessert buffet is served on the terrace. The 48 rooms are airy and elegant with flat-screen TVs, Champagne minibars, and chic bathrooms, but some rooms just have showers. Fresh flowers and welcome bottles of Mirto are nice touches, but there are no coffee- and tea-making facilities -- a surprising oversight for a luxury property. Also missing are on-site fitness and spa facilities (Villas Las Tronas, Hotel Pitrizza, and L'ea Bianca all have both). An adult-only policy makes this hotel best suited for couples on a romantic vacation who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of cities.

5

Hotel Cala Cuncheddi

Li Cuncheddi, Olbia, Sardinia

Hotel Cala Cuncheddi exudes a refined ambiance, with natural light filling airy spaces. Welcome cocktails are handed out upon arrival to guests, many of whom are couples seeking a quiet seaside escape. The 74 rooms have a sharp look and serene vibe. All have private balconies, flat-screen TVs, minibars, sleek furniture, and marble bathrooms with walk-in showers or soaking tubs, and Bulgari products. Suites add larger balconies, terrycloth robes, and double sinks in bathrooms. An outdoor pool, private beach access, and a posh spa are among Cala Cuncheddi's top features. There's also an on-site restaurant with free breakfast, but the hotel's distance from Olbia's restaurants and shops is a drawback. During high season, the hotel draws some families with kids in tow looking for a peaceful stay away from the crowds.
