Bottom Line

The Desert Quail Inn offers large rooms at a rate that is difficult to match in the Sedona area. Located in the Village of Oak Creek, it's about seven miles from Sedona, but the area has the same stunning scenery while being much less touristy. There is no on-site restaurant or bar, but the hotel does have a small pool and is in close proximity to some of the region's best hiking trails. It's a good base for families on budget, or those who plan on spending more time out hiking versus lounging. Those wanting a room with a view and a few more amenities might consider the Bell Rock Inn for slightly higher rates.

Oyster Hotel Review

Desert Quail Inn Sedona at Bell Rock

Scene

Roadside motel dressed up in red terracotta tiles

The small, sparse lobby isn't there to impress, just to get you checked in. Likewise, the minimal grounds consist mostly of a parking lot with direct outdoor access to rooms, a typical roadside motel design. There is a small pool, but otherwise no communal place where guests congregate, aside from the restaurant and grocery store next door.

Location

Village of Oak Creek near Sedona and Red Rock State Park

The Desert Quail Inn is on Highway 89A, which carries a steady stream of traffic going back and forth to Sedona. Six miles to the north (seven to uptown), Sedona is brimming with boutiques, restaurants, and art galleries -- the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts village has shops and artisans at work. Apart from Sedona's attractions, the area is also a first-rate destination for active travelers looking to go biking, hiking, or horseback riding. The Desert Quail is minutes away from the Sedona Golf Resort and the Oak Creek Country Club, and it's a two-hour drive south to Phoenix, or a two-hour drive north to the Grand Canyon.

Rooms

Clean and large, but off the parking lot

While lacking Red Rock views that draw crowds to the area, guest rooms are modern, large, and at some of the lowest rates available in the Sedona/Oak Creek vicinity. The decor is pretty understated: black, white, and beige bedding and furnishings, with Southwestern-patterned curtains. Though set off the parking lot, the noise level is minimal. All rooms come standard with a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker. The suites have fireplaces, and a few king suites have in-room whirlpool tubs within splash distance of the bed.

Features

Small pool, and a discount at restaurant next door

The small pool has views of Bell Rock and is the Desert Quail's most notable feature. It should come as no surprise that the motel lacks a fitness center and restaurant, especially at the rates it offers. There is, however, a walking path to a restaurant next door, the Red Rock Cafe, where the motel offers a discount on hearty Southwestern fare for breakfast and lunch. The lobby has an old computer available for use, but the average smartphone likely has more processing power. Some adjoining rooms are available for groups.
