Bottom Line

The 27-room Ambasciatori is a simple, comfortable hotel off Via Roma in Palermo. In the historic city center, the property is near many of Palermo's main attractions, including the Fontana Pretoria, Palermo Cathedral, and Galleria D'Arte Moderna. While the number of tourists here makes the area a hot spot for pickpockets, it's generally safe and incredibly convenient. The rooms at the Ambasciatori are large -- ranging from double to quadruple units -- and minimal. Renovations and updates have been done room by room, so there are a variety of styles present. The hotel's greatest treasure is its rooftop restaurant/lounge and solarium, from which guests get 360-degree views of the city.

Ambasciatori Hotel

Scene

A simple, understated hotel with large rooms ideal for budget-minded tourists and families

The scene at the Ambasciatori is one of low-key simplicity. Seemingly converted from an apartment building, the seven-story hotel doesn't have a great deal of common space, but it uses the little space it has well, employing bright wall colors -- marigold and grapefruit, for example -- and Roman-style artwork to make areas lively and welcoming. The Ambasciatori draws mostly tourists, though the venue does have a meeting room and computer/printer station for business travelers.

Despite the building's seven stories, the hotel's elevator, which is generally slow and cramped (it can fit no more than three people), only goes to the fifth floor. There are also a few steps in the lobby to reach the elevator, meaning that the hotel is not particularly suited to those with physical disabilities or who have difficulty climbing steps.

Location

In the center of Palermo, near famous monuments and central railway station

The Ambasciatori is conveniently located in Palermo’s historic city center, an ancient and beautiful part of town that has monuments like the Fontana Pretoria, Palermo Cathedral, Galleria D'Arte Moderna, Villa Giulia, and more. It is generally easy to get in, out, and around the city from the Ambasciatori, as the property is less than a 10-minute walk from Palermo's central train station. On Via Roma, a main thoroughfare, there are plenty of shops and restaurants in addition to tourist sights. Palermo’s airport is about 30 minutes west.

Rooms

Extra-large and unflashy, with sometimes tired furnishings

Rooms at the Ambasciatori are particularly useful to families or groups because of their large spaces, many of which include at least a double bed and day bed. There’s little in the way of aesthetics, and style and furnishings vary by room. The yellow and green walls and large windows create a warm, light-filled atmosphere, but bedspreads are thin and, in some rooms, show their age. Furniture generally consists of simple wood desks, bedside tables, and armoires in certain cases. Considering the sheer largeness of the room, the compact, simple furnishings make the space feel a little unfinished, but those who enjoy extra floor space will feel comfortable. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, small flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and self-controlled air-conditioning.

Bathrooms have rain showers and bidets and generally vary. Some are quite cramped while others are spacious. All are simply tiled, with Deluxe units featuring nicer craftsmanship and towel racks.

Features

A rooftop that's a treat for guests along with a small gym and meeting room

The Ambasciatori has a small 24-hour fitness room with a treadmill, an elliptical, a stationary bike, and a weight machine for the upper body. The hotel also has a small meeting room with a 10-person table, projector, and telephone. The greatest treasure of the property, however, is its rooftop. Seven stories up, the roof features the hotel's sophisticated Italian restaurant and lounge, Seven, and a solarium. From that height, guests can see much of Palermo, dotted with church cupolas and surrounded by mountain ranges, while taking in the sunset.
