Bottom Line

This mid-range hotel is located on a winding road high above the Mediterranean. The 146 guest rooms are simple and clean, but the decor is slightly dated. Spectacular gardens cover the grounds, with lush plants, flowers, and trees at every turn. The hotel has a large outdoor pool, complete with a whirlpool and bar. There is also a large indoor bar with generous seating. The hotel also has three restaurants -- one is indoors and the two others are on outdoor patios. Downsides include lack of a fitness center and fees for Wi-Fi and parking. Though there is an elevator, some guests may have trouble with the many stairs found throughout the property.

Hotel Ariston

Scene

Bright, welcoming decor with gorgeous gardens and several outdoor terraces

The lobby is elegant with tasteful, bright decor. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in a ton of natural light, and the yellow and green loveseats and blue rugs provide a cheerful, welcoming atmosphere. Orchids cover the various coffee tables, and intricately patterned cafe-style tables and vases have been placed around the room. Terra-cotta flooring changes to glossy marble with a red and green pattern near the entrance, and a dramatic chandelier hangs overhead. The lobby leads to a small outdoor terrace that offers a fantastic view of the Mediterranean. There's a gorgeous garden filled with lush trees and flowers, beautiful stone walls, and patios, which make for a private, secluded setting.

Rooms

Clean, simple rooms with dated decor

Guests enter the hotel from the fifth or sixth floor and use the elevator to reach the simple, small rooms that are less upscale than the rest of the hotel. They are bit dated, with an '80s flair -- white tiled floors, dark wood and turquoise accents, mirrored closets, and white leather armchairs and stools. Some have balconies and sea views. The beds are two twin-size beds pushed together, with a large wood headboard with two built-in shelves on either side. All the rooms have small flat screen TVs, coffee- and tea-making facilities, mini-fridges, and safes. Guests are given a free bowl of fruit and a bottle of sparkling wine when they check in. The bathrooms are bland and functional, with light-blue tiled floors and walls, small sinks with soap dispensers, glass enclosed showers, bidets, and basic toiletries. A towel warmer is a nice touch. Note that there is a charge for Wi-Fi.
