Bottom Line

The Memoire d' Angkor Boutique Hotel is a medium-sized property with 48 rooms set right in the heart of downtown Siem Reap. The hotel is on Sivatha Road, the main street, with hundreds of restaurants and shops nearby. It's also only a 15-minute drive to Angkor Wat and the airport. The rooms here have contemporary Khmer decor, plus modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, minibars, safe boxes, and electric hot water kettles -- but they don't have any views and some of the furnishings are a bit worn. The hotel has a small pool, fitness center, and spa, plus a lobby lounge and restaurant that has live traditional music and Apsara dance shows each evening. There is also a nice art gallery in the lobby which is used for a cocktail happy hour at night. The Memoire d' Angkor is in a great location and has enough features to keep guests happy, but compared to other boutique properties at similar prices (Siddharta, Golden Temple), it doesn't quite have the same shine, so it pays to compare rates before heading here.

Memoire d’ Angkor Boutique Hotel

Scene

White columns and carved door create an imposing entrance, but a colorful art gallery can be found right next to the lobby.

The Memoire d' Angkor looks quite imposing from the outside -- like a Greek temple with its gleaming white columns that guard the entry to the hotel.  A set of large, fine-carved red wooden doors leads inside, where the lobby is surprisingly small, but holds a couple of chairs and a small table set against a wall full of Buddha and elephant statues. Fortunately, there is an open art space, the Memoire Gallery, that is right next to the lobby, where guests can relax and enjoy the fine art and traditional Khmer pieces on display. This area is used as a pre-dinner cocktail lounge in the evenings, when guests and outsiders come for the traditional Apsara dance dinners. The gallery area is a bright and cozy spot in a building that doesn't have too many other public spaces.

Location

Central convenient location right next to a shopping mall and a 10-minute walk from Pub Street and Old Market

The Memoire d' Angkor Boutique Hotel is located in downtown Siem Reap, right near the top of main street Sivatha Road, surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shops. The town's only mall, Lucky Mall, is right next door, and it is a 10-minute walk to the touristy Pub Street and Old Market, as well as over to the riverside area, with all of its charming restaurants. The temples of Angkor Wat and the international airport are only 10 minutes away by car, so it really is a perfect location, although Sivatha Road has heavy traffic and plenty of noise during the day, so it is pretty busy right out front of the hotel. Needless to say, finding taxis or tuk tuks in this spot is easily done.

Rooms

Higher-category suite rooms have cool hanging "swing" chairs or sofas, but all rooms come with free laundry service and minibars stocked with freebies.

There are 48 rooms at the Memoire d' Angkor Boutique Hotel, most of which are standard Deluxe Rooms. These rooms have wood floors but are rather sparsely furnished, although they do each have a table and set of chairs, desk, flat-screen TV, and choice of double or twin beds. Rather worn cabinets have bathrobes, safes, and electric hot water kettles for making tea and coffee. The best part of these rooms are the minibars stocked with free beer, along with free laundry service for guests throughout their stays. There is also free Wi-Fi, but the hotel no longer offers free breakfast to all room types. The main drawback to all the room categories are the lack of views of any type, and only the Junior Suites offer tiny balconies. The Suite rooms are better choices, as they include hanging "swing" chairs -- or even swinging sofa beds in the Memoire Suites -- but these rooms are quite expensive compared to similar digs around town.

Features

Many small, but well-maintained, features can be found here -- and nightly performances are popular.

The hotel has plenty of features, although they are all on the small side. The back of the Memoire d' Angkor is where you'll find the swimming pool, along with a tiny fitness center and two-room massage spa. There is a pool bar here, and also another bar, the more stylish Memoire Lounge, colored all red, which sits adjacent to the lobby. The hotel has one restaurant, Ozentik Cuisine, which serves both buffet breakfasts as well as all-day dining, and in the evening, the restaurant hosts a traditional Apsara dancing show to go with Khmer cuisine dinners. The most pleasant area of the property to many is its Memoire Gallery, which is next to the small lobby and has artwork in bright colors displayed; this is where pre-dinner drinks for the Apsara shows are served in the evenings.
