Bottom Line

The Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa is one of the finest hotels in Siem Reap, and features a blend of colonial charm and modern luxury throughout its 129 rooms. The rooms and suites here are large and elegantly furnished, and all come with modern amenities. The swimming pool here is one of Siem Reap's largest and most impressive. Additionally, the hotel has excellent upscale dining choices, both French and Khmer, as well as a colonial style bar. From the cable elevators off of the lobby, to the antique Citroens parked out front, the old style charm here is superb. Additionally, the resort is just minutes from the town center and located just off the main road to Angkor Wat. If you can afford the price tag, it's a highly recommended stay, although it can be very crowded and some rooms have subpar views.

Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa

Scene

Classic colonial luxury throughout, with a vintage Citroens out front, and antique wood cage elevators and a crocodile pond inside

The Victoria Angkor Resort exudes elegance and class. It's a grand colonial hotel that greets visitors with several vintage Citroen cars outside. The hotel is painted yellow both inside and out, making it resemble the old colonial buildings one finds in Hanoi, Vietnam. The lobby has yellow-and-black checkered tiled floors, rattan and fine wood chairs and furniture, and Buddha statues, and there is even a woman doing traditional silk spinning out in front of the boutique shop which adjoins the lobby. Behind this are a pair of classic cable elevators with metal cages and wood doors, ascending next to dark teak wood stairs.

The rooms here all surround an interior courtyard that has tropical plants, a fish pond in the middle, and even an area full of small Siam crocodiles. Throughout the building there are fine art photos -- mostly depicting classic turn-of-the-century scenes or traditional Khmer scenes. It's a great blend of colonial and classic Khmer. The Victoria Angkor is one of those rare, excellent combinations of both old and new, and just about anyone who stays here will find something to appreciate, whether it's the antiques and explorer-themed bar and suites, or the massive pool and family-friendly kids' club.

Location

Central location across from a park, a 15-minute drive from Angkor temples, and a 15-minute walk to Pub Street

The Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa has an excellent spot in the center of Siem Reap. The hotel sits just off of National Highway 6 on a quiet side street with a pleasant park right across from it. It is a 15-minute drive to both the temples of Angkor Wat and the international airport from here, and it is about the same on foot to the Old Market and Pub Street area of downtown. Within a few minutes on foot from the hotel is Sivatha Road, where one can find hundreds of restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and markets.

Rooms

Ultra-spacious rooms and suites feature fine wood floors with tile borders. Plus, minibars stocked with free alcohol can be found in the unique themed suites.

Even the entry-level Superior Rooms at the Victoria Angkor are super spacious, making them some of the town's largest standard quarters. Like all the rooms here, they have fine wood floors with colorful tile borders, large private balconies, writing desks, tropical jungle scene paintings, and stylish furniture. Additionally, there are alarm clocks, minibars, safes, electric water kettles, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and all rooms come with free WiFi and breakfast. Spacious bathrooms have bathtub/shower units, provided toiletries, and bathrobes and slippers. The only drawback to the Superior Rooms is that they don't face the massive swimming pool. The Deluxe Rooms, however, do -- offering great views, plus extra toiletries like bath salts, and more stylish furniture.

At the top of the room selections are the nine individually unique suites, which each have their own theme. The Japanese Suite has all Japanese decor, the Maharajah Suite resembles an Indian palace, and the Victoria Suite is an explorer's quarters, with leopard print couches, African travel photos on the wall, and separate tubs and showers, along with huge living room quarters. The suites also provide minibars stocked with free alcohol, and guests of these rooms can have up to four pieces of laundry done for free each day. These are some of the most elegant digs you'll find in Cambodia.

Features

Several upscale dining options, a colonial bar, and one of Siem Reap's largest swimming pools

Victoria Angkor Resort has some excellent facilities. The hotel's enormous swimming pool is one of the largest in town, and takes up much of the hotel grounds. The pool is long and not too deep, making it suitable for kids. There are loungers surrounding the pool, along with a poolside bar, and the Victoria Angkor must be the only hotel in Cambodia that uses a tuk tuk to hold the pool towels. There is also a whirlpool and a small kids' pool behind the main pool in a garden setting. The resort has a pampering spa with both an indoor treatment area and outdoor massage salas. The hotel also has a business center with free computers open 24 hours, and a small ballroom for conferences and functions. It's also one of the only hotels in Siem Reap that has a kids' club.

The dining and drinking options here are quite impressive as well. The L'Escale restaurant serves free breakfast buffets and then has Khmer and western food for lunch and dinner in a large indoor and outdoor setting. Menu items like zucchini and goat cheese salad or gnocchi are not easily found in Cambodia, but they are served here. The neighboring Bistrot de Siem Reap serves upscale French fare in a stylish dining room, where tables are surrounded by fine art photos, and there is a well-stocked wine cellar with bottles from Europe and elsewhere. The L'Explorateur Bar stays true to the Victoria's colonial theme, with photos from around the world explorations, fine cigar boxes, and board games to go with the comfortable armchairs.

The Victoria has a fleet of vintage Citroen cars out front which can be hired to tour around the temples at Angkor, and they also have mountain bikes for rent for those who want a bit of exercise.
