Bottom Line

Fragrance Hotel - Emerald is a no-frills budget property situated outside of the city center on busy Geylang Road in Singapore's red-light district, about a 10-minute walk from the MRT station. The hotel has few extra property features other than a lobby area, and no breakfast is served, though the front desk is open 24-hours and Wi-Fi throughout the hotel is free. The hotel's 126 rooms are small and sparse, but clean for a budget property, with amenities like en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and electric kettles. The neighborhood is packed with value accommodations, and travelers should compare rates with similar hotels in the Fragrance Hotel chain or the Hotel 81 chain, both prevalent in the area.

Scene

Functional budget hotel with few extras

From the outside, Fragrance Hotel - Emerald has a Grand Budapest vibe with a dated eight-story pink and salmon exterior marked with the hotel's name in retro, motel-style lettering. "Grand" isn't quite the description for the interior, however, but it's fine, functional, and in-line with the chain's focus on value properties in Singapore, with many lining the lanes of Geylang. The lobby features an inset wood reception desk and a handful of chairs, including two huge massage chairs and two stools in front of computers, available for guest use. The lobby isn't really a place where guests hangout for long periods -- indeed, it's not really a hotel designed for hanging out at all. It's a wallet-friendly place for guests to lay their heads, attracting a variety of budget-minded travelers, including couples and small families.

Location

Outside of city center in Singapore's red-light district

This hotel is located on one of the small lanes (lorong) off busy Geylang Road, situated between residential properties and competing budget hotels in the city's government-approved red light district. Despite the location, many guests find the area relatively safe. Several eateries along Geylang Road can be reached in as little as two minutes, the Kallang MRT Station is a 10-minute walk, and the National Stadium is a 12-minute walk. There's also a bus stop within a three-minute walk of the hotel. While Singapore's main attractions aren't in the immediate area, most can be reached in 20 minutes to a half hour via public transit.- 18 minutes to the Esplanade via public transit

  • 20 minutes to Clarke Quay via public transit
  • 20 minutes to the Merlion via public transit
  • 20 minutes to Little India via public transit
  • 25 minutes to Orchard Road shopping via public transit
  • 35 minutes to HarbourFront via public transit
  • 50 minutes to Changi International Airport via public transit

Rooms

Small, basic rooms with en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and electric kettles

Guest rooms are simple and straightforward with bare floors, white walls, and black lacquer furniture with a somewhat odd rose motif, which also makes an appearance in wall-sized headboards, sometimes with cutout sections where pictures are supposed to hang but don't. Bathrooms are compact with salmon- and cream-colored tiling, pedestal sinks, and open showers. Wear is evident throughout with water stains, scuff marks, but most guests find rooms clean for a budget property. There are three room sizes, all of them fairly small: Superior, Deluxe, and Superior Family. Deluxe Rooms add just a touch more space, while Superior Family Rooms are designed for up to three guests, with each featuring one queen bed and one single. All rooms have air-conditioning, small tables that can function as desks, and flat-screen TVs with cable. They also include free bottled water and electric kettles for coffee and tea. There are no mini-fridges, and irons and ironing boards are only offered on request. Bathrooms have hairdryers and soap in wall-mounted dispensers.
