Bottom Line

The Perak Hotel is a tiny, two-pearl hotel with 35 rooms at the edge of Singapore’s bustling Little India district. There are tons of affordable eats nearby, and the hotel is 20 minutes away from the city center and Marina Gardens by public transport. Although the rooms here are tiny and far from modern, they have some degree of charm, with colonial-era French windows and blue wooden shutters in some. They have minibars, flat-screen TVs, and safes, but bathrooms are small and clinical feeling. Although there's no full restaurant -- or other features for that matter -- all rates include a simple breakfast. Wi-Fi is only accessible in the hotel’s shared areas. Guests looking for a more modern hotel might want to try the nearby Parc Sovereign Tyrwhitt, which also has a pool and gym.

Perak Hotel

Scene

A traditional colonial-era building in Little India with wooden shutters painted aquamarine

The Perak Hotel is set in a whitewashed, colonial-era building with a shaded colonnade out front, and wooden shutters painted aquamarine. Inside, the hotel is far from modern, but it has a degree of simple charm, with dark-wood floors, whitewashed walls, and colorful wall hangings. Though tucked in a stairwell, a large golden statue of the Buddha on top of a glass-topped wooden table stands out. The small breakfast room has terra-cotta tiled floors, bent-wood chairs, and little tables with round marble tops. The hotel tends to attract tourists looking to stay in a small and quiet hotel in the relative calm of the charming Little India district, while still retaining good links into the city center.

Location

In Little India, a 12-minute drive from Clarke Quay

Located toward the eastern end of Singapore’s relatively quiet Little India district, the hotel is surrounded by shops and restaurants. Although the hotel is in a calmer part of town, that does not mean that it is cut off from the city center or tourist hotspots. It is only a 12-minute drive or 14 minutes by public transit to Clarke Quay and the Orchard shopping district. Chinatown is a similar distance away by car, or 18 minutes away by RMT from the nearby Rochor station, just over the river from the hotel. The Marina Gardens are a 15- to 20-minute drive away, or half an hour on public transport. Expect a 20- to 25-minute transfer to Changi Airport by car, or just over an hour by public transit.

A free buffet breakfast and a business corner with a printer, but very little else
