Bottom Line

The Forest by Wangz is a distinctive, upscale apartment hotel located in the residential Novena District of Singapore. While the location is a bit away from the city's tourist and business hot spots, it's pleasant, with plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. The 38 serviced apartments have excellent contemporary finishes, with good self-catering options such as kitchenettes, full refrigerators, and laundry facilities. In-room home cinema systems increase the appeal of a night in, but a sunny pool and rooftop terrace lures guests out to the public spaces.

Oyster Hotel Review

The Forest by Wangz

Scene

Relaxed, distinctive property with contemporary rain-forest theme

Inspired by the interplay of shadow in a rain forest, the distinctive facade of The Forest by Wangz is hard to miss. The jungle-theme-meets-sharp-21st-century styling continues inside, with polished gray stone floors, contemporary design furnishings, and tropical motifs, while also showcasing specially commissioned artwork and sculpture. Aside from the residents' lounge, guests can unwind in the attractive rooftop terrace with tropical vegetation, shaded seating, and panoramic views of the cityscape. The vibe is relaxed and personal, with an especially hospitable staff and immaculately presented interiors, attracting a mix of couples, families, and business guests.

Location

Set in upscale residential Novena District, 10 minutes' drive from downtown

The hotel is located in the upscale and largely residential Novena District, close to the new medical hub to the north of downtown Singapore. While there's not a great deal in the immediate area, there are plenty of restaurants and retail outlets -- including two shopping malls -- within a 15-minute walking radius. The Orchard Road high-end shopping belt is about 10 minutes away by cab, while the business and financial districts are around 15 minutes away. Changi International Airport about a 30-minute drive away, or about an hour via public transportation -- the nearest MRT subways is Novena, which is within a five-minute walk of the hotel.

Rooms

Clean and cozy serviced apartments with home cinema systems

The property has 38 serviced apartments comprising studios and one-bedroom units. Decor is fresh and modern, in neutral tones though with homey touches, wooden floorboards, and colorful artwork. Studios are open plan with compact kitchenettes, but they can feel a bit cramped for more than one person. One bedroom apartments feature separate and fully equipped kitchens with small lounge areas. Amenities include free high-speed Wi-Fi, 40-inch HD flat-screen TVs with 30 satellite channels and home cinema-style sound, as well as the free loan of an Xbox console and in-house movie library. Bathrooms are clean and contemporary, with frosted glass partitions -- which aren't great for privacy -- as well as walk-in rainfall showers and Molton Brown products (replenished only once a week).

Features

Free buffet breakfast and rooftop terrace with cityscape vistas

A simple breakfast buffet with pastries, fresh fruit, cereal, and eggs is included in the rate, though it's limited in choice and isn't served on Sundays or public holidays, and there's no full restaurant to provide other meals. A small infinity-edge pool, surrounded by loungers and tropical plants, is large enough for a few strokes but is shallow. There's a residents' lounge for guests' use, as well as a superb rooftop terrace with views toward downtown Singapore. A small gym is also available for guests' use, complete with cardio and weight machines and free weights. Wi-Fi is free of charge, as is basement parking.
