Bottom Line

The 64-room Sultan Hotel is a lovely boutique in the historic district of Kampong Glam. Though there are few hotels in the area (most tourists choose to stay in downtown or Chinatown), the location is within walking distance of numerous sights. Constructed from 10 historic shops, the hotel has attractive period details including arched doorways, wood-beamed ceilings, and latticework screens. The rooms, however, aren't quite as charming as the lobby or the on-site restaurant. Suites have some attractive features and design touches, and standard rooms are decorated in clean, contemporary decor of whites and light woods -- but they're small, and bathrooms are cramped. Amenities are modern, however, and include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, and espresso machines. Hotel highlights include the rooftop bar, and Pasha restaurant, serving Moroccan cuisine.

The Sultan

Location

In the Arab Street district, within easy reach of other popular areas of the city

Aptly named, the Sultan Hotel is located in the Arab Street District (also referred to as Kampong Glam), an area where Middle Eastern culture can be experienced daily. The streets are lined by historic buildings and markets selling spices, flowers, and rugs. It is also home to a historic palace (now a heritage center) and the largest mosque in Singapore.

Though the Arab Street district is often not what people picture when envisioning Singapore, major attractions are not too far away. It lies right above the downtown area and Marina Bay, and east of Little India, which has a similar vibe to the Arab Street district.

Singapore is known for heavy traffic so all of these travel times are estimates.

  • 19-minute drive to Changi International Airport, or 48 minutes via public transportation
  • 4-minute walk to the Kampong Glam Palace, now the Malay Heritage Center
  • 5-minute walk to the Sultan Mosque, the largest mosque in Singapore
  • 9-minute walk to the famous Raffles Hotel
  • 18-minute walk to Little India
  • 19-minute walk to Downtown
  • 21-minute walk to the Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Center, or a 6-minute drive
  • 4-minute drive to the Marina Bay area, or a 21-minute bus ride
  • 4-minute drive to the Esplanade Theater and Library, or 16 minutes via public transportation
  • 5-minute drive to the City Hall and the Padang, or a 10-minute bus ride
  • 6-minute drive to the Parliament House, or a 12-minute bus ride
  • 7-minute drive to Esplanade Park, or a 14-minute bus ride
  • 7-minute drive to Fort Canning Park, or a 19-minute bus ride
  • 8-minute drive to St. Andrew's Cathedral, or 12 minutes via public transportation
  • 8-minute drive to the National Museum of Singapore, or a 12-minute bus ride
  • 9-minute drive to Orchard Road, or an 18-minute bus ride
  • 10-minute drive to Chinatown, or a 17-minute bus ride
