Bottom Line

Wanderlust is an upscale boutique hotel for thrill seekers and design connoisseurs with unique interiors created by four different Singapore-based architecture firms -- one for each floor of the hotel. The result is an adult playground of sorts filled with wild art and fantastical rooms brimming with both character and amenities. Rooms range from tiny and capsule-like with bathrooms that lack privacy, to large loft-style units inspired by themes such as rocket ships and tree houses. Amenities include a rainbow-tiled hot tub in a quaint lawn outside next to a sun deck and there's a casual French restaurant where an included breakfast is served. The hotel feels slightly inaccessible as it's tucked away on a side street in Little India, but more adventurous travelers will be at home the colorful neighborhood.

Scene

Old schoolhouse converted into a modern design hotel

Wanderlust is a concept hotel housed in a restored schoolhouse that dates back to the 1920s. Each floor was redesigned by a different creative team and has its own unique decor concept. The ground-floor lobby has a polished industrial style, concrete walls and floors decorated with old signage, restored barbers' chairs, and bucket seats from a defunct local movie theater along with a foosball table.  The second level is all neon lights and rainbow walls, while the third takes its minimalist monochrome inspiration from paper drawings and origami. The top floor has a fantasy theme populated by "friendly monsters" and unique installations.

Rooms

Wild designer rooms with Nespresso machines and iPod docks

Wanderlust's 29 rooms and suites cover a wide range of styles, sizes, and decor themes. All have flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, iPod docks, and mini-fridges.The small, single-color Pantone Rooms are washed in color and have matching accent lighting, with beds built into platforms at one end. Bathrooms have toilets and walk-in showers encapsulated in transparent glass stalls that lack privacy.

The larger Mono Rooms have a black-and-white palate with individualized decor based on an origami theme. Back-lit cutouts of furniture against the wall are deceivingly realistic, and the rooms feature a few real furnishings as well, including desks and chairs. The black-and-white-tiled bathrooms have walk-in showers and separate soaking tubs.

The top floor houses the Whimsical lofts rooms which have a variety of extravagant themes, from the mirrored Bling lofts, to dark Space rooms with colorful rocket ships. In the Tree rooms, the lofted bedroom is designed like a treehouse.
