Honfleur, Calvados, Basse-Normandie
Le Manoir Des Impressionnistes certainly makes quite an impression upon first sight: the 18th-century manor house, surrounded by pretty gardens and ancient woods, could easily be the home of an undercover princess (like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty) or an evil witch. Its setting on a hill overlooking the Seine estuary is quite special, and some rooms enjoy lovely sea-view sunsets. The on-site spa in a converted farmhouse is well received, as is the restaurant that uses locally sourced ingredients. There's no pool, but rates are nevertheless reasonable for such a charming package.

A romantic countryside retreat, this beautiful four-pearl spa hotel provides a relaxing getaway in a Georgian-style country house set on 10 acres of lush gardens. The 21 rooms are large, mixing contemporary and classic decor with some gorgeous views of the English-style garden grounds. Homewood Park is private and secluded, yet it doesn't feel isolated, as it is just a few minutes from downtown Bath. The on-site Tides restaurant is one of the most popular in the area. Castello Banfi Il Borgo is an 18th-century farmers village that was born around the medieval Banfi Castle. The village (in Italian “Il Borgo”) has been restored and transformed in a luxury resort, and is part of a 7,100-acre property where high-quality red wines are produced. The hotel's 14 rooms and suites reflect this heritage, and each is named after one of the bottles produced by Banfi. Expect plenty of charming historical character throughout the property; picturesque stone buildings have wood beams, brick archways, and terra-cotta tiles inside. The chic pool has stunning views of the vineyards, and there are also two restaurants, a wine shop, and a glass museum. Those looking to explore the region should note that destinations such as Siena and Montepulciano are nearly an hour away by car. The 40-room Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is a less formal, more accessible alternative to the more famous Ashford Castle to the east. It has a riverfront location amid the wild, unspoiled beauty of Connemara and decor that's alternately homey and elegant. It's more of a manor house than a castle, but the main structure dates to the 18th century and both the building and the estate are steeped in history. The 450-acre grounds offer a range of activities, including beautiful hikes, woodcock shooting, and fishing. Both restaurants serve terrific gourmet cuisine using fish, game, and mushrooms from the surrounding region. There are few other hotels that can boast such a picture-perfect English country setting as the Old Swan & Minster Mill, a wonderfully quaint and cozy old inn in the Cotswolds region. Rooms are split between the old inn and a newer building and most have beautiful furnishings. Although it's a high-end property, there's no pool, although spa treatments are available. Nevertheless, it's a great option for those wanting to experience a slice of timeless rural England. Set on sprawling private grounds in the Ahrntal Valley (known as the "Valle Aurina" in Italian), in the small village of Lutago, the Hotel Schwarzenstein is an upscale, family-run mountain spa and wellness retreat. There's not much within walking distance, apart from the many mountain hiking trails, a few shops, restaurants, and a small church. Three major ski areas are nearby, two of which the hotel provides free daily shuttles to during the winter months, making this an ideal base for skiers and leisure travelers looking for a high-altitude holiday. Many of the rooms showcase a modern take on traditional alpine decor and postcard-worthy views of the mountains. Ashford Castle embodies the fantasy of the Irish castle hotel, featuring a massive historic stone facade, complete with towers and turrets; gorgeous, manicured grounds; a stunning setting on a huge lake; and common spaces that are truly grand, with rich wood paneling, chandeliers, and antique furniture. After such magnificence, the rooms can be a bit of a letdown. They still retain elements of their original elegance, but some have frumpy style and need renovations. George V Dining Room offers excellent, formal fine dining (jackets are required in the evening), and drinks and tea can be enjoyed in the graceful drawing room with lake views. The wide range of estate activities includes falconry lessons, boat tours on the lake, golf at the 9-hole course, clay shooting, and archery. Hotel del Oso is a five-pearl property with surprisingly affordable rates and a welcoming staff, located a short drive from the Picos de Europa Mountains. Natural beauty and the excellent on-site restaurant are the main draws here -- the restaurant is known to fill up with locals who gather for the traditional Cantabrian cuisine. Nicely manicured grounds include an unheated swimming pool, gardens, and recreational facilities like a playground and tennis court. Rooms are decorated simply but luxuriously in a lodge theme with pine furnishings. There's very little to find fault with at La Maison du Parc, with its lovely gardens, beautifully maintained townhouse, five superbly finished rooms, and excellent fresh continental breakfast. It's located in a quiet neighborhood, a short walk from the town center and its amenities. As the Maison du Parc is a bed and breakfast, don't expect much in the way of facilities -- there's no pool, spa, or business center. Rates are a little higher than at your average B&B, but this place is well above average. The 77-room Chateau Monfort is a high-end, five-pearl property located just outside Milan's center. Elegant, whimsical rooms and public spaces are designed with a fairytale theme -- think blue ombre paint, shiny curtains, and a heavy hand with floral wall stencils. The Cinderella Suite has a stencil wall clock (a reference to Cinderella's midnight curfew) and a dress mannequin (calling to mind the gown Cinderella's helpers sewed for her before her evil stepsisters destroyed it). Bathrooms are large and airy with white fixtures and deep soaking tubs. A wine bar, lobby bar, and gourmet restaurant are convenient, and the on-site spa, with a grotto-style swimming pool, is a definite perk. There's only one reason you would go to the Gardaland Hotel Resort and that is to treat the little ones. This fantasy- and fairytale-themed amusement park hotel has everything you'd expect at a spot geared toward keeping kids happy, including themed rooms, a huge pool, a range of children's activities, and a location near one of Europe's best-known amusement parks. Grownups, however, might struggle to remain amused—there's little beyond the bar and pool for adults. The hotel's not cheap either, but it may be worth the price to see the smiles on the kiddies' faces. The Sealife Room (pictured) is sure to please fans of "The Little Mermaid," and the Magic House Room might remind young ones of the setting in "Goldilocks and the Three Bears."
