Bottom Line

The 15-room budget Hamlet Inn is a Danish-inspired boutique-style property in the center of Solvang, in California wine country. The family-owned Hamlet does simplicity with flair: guest rooms are bright, cheerful, and inviting, decorated in Danish flags and coats of arms. The hotel lends guests red touring bikes for exploring the picturesque village, and offers two-for-one wine and beer tasting vouchers to local wineries. The Hamlet Inn is a warm, memorable place to stay though it doesn't have a restaurant or pool.

Hamlet Inn

Scene

Warm and welcoming, with a quaint lawn and gazebo, and Danish-inspired touches

The Hamlet Inn is family-owned and managed, reflecting the spirit of picturesque Solvang, which was founded by Danes, and the warm, welcoming clan that runs the place. The inn is motel-style, with most rooms opening right onto the parking lot, but the vibe is modern and high end, with a simple Scandinavian aesthetic and touches of industrial chic. Bright Danish blue and the red and bright white of the Danish flag feature prominently in the upholstery, art, and fixtures, and there is a lot of natural wood used in the furnishings and the quaint gazebo, which is also the designated smoking area. There is a bocce ball court surrounded with lounge chairs for sunning between wine tastings. For much of the year, the clientele is predominately couples and single travelers exploring wine country, with families passing through during the summer months. The feel is uncluttered and peaceful, with cool artwork on the walls, the Danish coat of arms over beds, and lovely, spotless rooms and beds draped with coverlet versions of the Danish flag. The owners take pride in their heritage, and their attention to detail makes this hotel a good bet.
