Bottom Line

Few if any hotels in Sorrento offer more spectacular views of the Gulf of Naples than the Belair, which is built right into the side of a cliff about a half-mile from the Cathedral of Sorrento. Hotel Belair is not especially upscale, but it does have the elegant feel of an Italian property of yesteryear. Rooms are basic, but nearly all have balconies with gulf views. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, the outdoor pool and sun terrace offer up more gulf views. The restaurant serves fairly typical Mediterranean and Sorrentine cuisine and offers outdoor dining. Guests have access to the spa facilities (hot tub, steam bath, massage services, and beauty treatments) at a nearby sister hotel.

Hotel Belair

Scene

Cliffside setting with oases of green and blue; property has retro feel

Housed in a three-floor tiered Mediterranean-style building of light yellow and white, the Belair has a cliffside location that showcases views of the Gulf of Naples from its pool deck, restaurant terrace, and many of its rooms. The outdoor pool gets a lot of direct sunlight, so it produces a sparkling blue color for a dramatic effect. The surrounding gardens provide shelter, shade, and pleasant seating. One area on the cliffside has a fresco painted on the rock.

Most of the rooms are rather simple in their decor, but the lobby and reception have an Old World feel, with chandeliers, a white piano, pale blue sofas, artwork, and antique cabinets. The Belair has an overall style that harkens back to its heyday in the 1950s and ‘60s. Some may find it evocative of La Dolce Vita-era Italy, while others may find the aesthetic a bit dated. The owners are planning updates.

The Belair is perched on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of Naples, with a prime location for seeing the sights of Sorrento. The hotel is about a 15-minute walk from the Cathedral of Sorrento, with the Piazza Tasso and Basilica di Sant'Antonino only slightly further away by foot. The Sorrento train station is southeast of the hotel, as is The Dali Universe, a 10-minute walk away. The ferries to Naples and Amalfi Coast depart from the dock one and a quarter miles east. For longer excursions by car, Pompeii is about a 45-minute drive north, while the drive to Mount Vesuvius is about an hour and 15 minutes. Naples International Airport is about an hour north of the hotel as well.
