Bottom Line

The vibrant, salmon-pink Cornaro Hotel sits just outside Diocletian's Palace, a one-minute walk from the beginning of Split's historic center. Due to its location on the edge of the historic area, the large rooftop terrace (with a whirlpool hot tub) and some of the Deluxe Rooms offer sweeping city views of bell towers and glimpses the deep blue water. The mid-range hotel is also throughly modern, with contemporary decor and spacious common areas, two restaurants, and a small fitness center. Hot breakfast buffet is included in the rates. However, some travelers find the overall design to be more functional than charming. As an alternative, the Hotel Luxe has cheaper rates and is more design conscious.

Cornaro Hotel

Scene

Modern and popular with groups of business travelers and tourists

The modern, if slightly impersonal, Cornaro Hotel is a contemporary property bordering some of Split's most ancient foundations. Since opening in 2014, the hotel has grown into neighboring buildings and currently offers 147 rooms. Common spaces have been expanded to accommodate the new rooms, with the addition of a second 24-hour reception desk fronted by black leather sofas, as well as another airy restaurant. The ample space and conference facilities sometimes attract tour groups and business travelers who appreciate the vicinity to the center, but groups can take over the lobby.

Location

Poised on the edge of Split's historic pedestrianized center

Bordering the walls of Diocletian’s Palace (a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s most impressive Roman monuments) Hotel Cornaro is a one-minute walk from the start of Split’s old town. The position on the edge of the historic quarter makes the hotel a good base for exploring the plethora of restaurants and shops in the pedestrianized center. Buses pass along the street on the other side of the hotel but lead mainly to the suburbs. A trip to the ferry terminal or airport bus stop, which are 15-minutes away on foot, might be more comfortable via a short taxi ride to avoid pulling luggage through the paved alleyways. A taxi to the Split airport takes approximately 30 minutes.

Rooms

Clean and contemporary design with upgrades available for city views

Shades of muted tans, dove gray, and white dominate the modern rooms at Cornaro Hotel. Comfort Rooms are the tightest squeeze but Superior and Deluxe Rooms have enough space for a pullout love seat. Deluxe Rooms also have the possibility of a city view and a nice upgrade to Chopard toiletries in the large bathrooms. All rooms have a similar design, with black and white photographs of the Split on the walls. They also come with a stocked mini-bar, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and a safe. Junior Suites add a kitchenette with a sink, stovetop, and mini-fridge -- plus cutlery. Bathrooms feature shower/tub combos and nice toiletries. The Premium Rooms have interior whirlpool hot tubs.

Features

Two restaurants, a rooftop bar, a gym, and terrace with hot tubs and city views

Being technically outside of the historic center affords Cornaro Hotel the space for additional features which are absent in many of Split’s smaller hotels. To serve all 147 rooms, the hotel has two large restaurants which offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The included breakfast buffet is diverse and includes Croatian and Western items. There is an option to order the Diocletian's Imperial Breakfast, which recreates Ancient Roman menu items. The two rooftop terraces have lovely city views, lounge chairs, a hot tub, and a bar for drinks and snacks. The hotel also has a functional fitness center and free Wi-Fi throughout.
