Bottom Line

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino is an upper-middle-range hotel located in St. Maarten’s Maho Village. With 395 guest rooms, it’s the biggest all-inclusive property on the island and features the extensive array of dining and activity options travelers would expect from a resort this size. The resort offers easy access to the island’s largest casino and one of its trendiest night clubs, along with a touristy beach where visitors often clamor to get a glimpse of jumbo jets landing at the nearby airport. This resort is big on entertainment, but offers little in the way of local charm. Guests looking for a tranquil vacation might consider the more secluded Westin Dawn Beach Resort & Spa instead.

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa

Scene

High-energy resort with nice landscaping but characterless decor

Sonesta
Maho sits on nicely landscaped grounds and some of its restaurants offer
ocean views, but overall it's a bland resort. The facilities and rooms are largely dark and dull, although the resort is addressing this issue, an renovations should be completed by the end of 2017. The resort
attracts a diverse crowd of families, couples of all ages, and groups, including conference attendees. Its animated atmosphere suits rowdy kids and
partiers equally well. This boisterous ambiance is ideal for guests who like to
be in the middle of the action, but those seeking a relaxing getaway might find
it too hectic.

Location

Lively location in Maho Village, surrounded by shops, restaurants, and bars

Sonesta Maho is located on the Dutch side of the island,
a four-minute drive from Princess Juliana International Airport. It's in the heart of Maho Village, one of St. Maarten’s main hubs for entertainment and nightlife and home to around 40 duty-free shops. The resort faces a
touristy promenade that encompasses the hotel’s affiliated casino as well as Tantra
Nightclub, which is popular with tourists and locals alike. The resort features direct access to busy Maho Beach as well, where low-flying planes en route to/from the airport offer unusual photo ops. Mullet Bay Beach -- a quieter alternative to Maho -- can be reached in 15 minutes on foot.

Features

Pool with swim-up bar, direct access to buzzing Maho Beach, and five dining venues

With five restaurants, a spa, a casino, a beach, a pool, and a regular line-up of activities, this resort offers enough to keep most guests occupied on-site. The hotel’s main pool, Oasis, includes a few arched bridges and an attractive waterfall feature. The pool has a swim-up bar with submerged in-pool seating, in addition to a dry seating area on the deck. Pleasant greenery and rock walls surround the deck, and there are plenty of lounge chairs and beach umbrellas. There's also a shallow rectangular kids’ pool on one side of the main pool.

The hotel’s Casino Royale is located just across the street, next door to St. Maarten’s most popular nightclub, Tantra. The island’s largest casino, it features 21 gaming tables, and over 400 slot machines. The hotel’s main buffet restaurant -- Ocean Terrace Restaurant -- is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has a cheerful interior with pastel-striped booths and wooden flooring. Its breezy outdoor terrace is shared with Pizzeria Napoli restaurant. Other dining
options include open-air Palms Grill, which offers lunch and dinner in the high season. There's also the Point, an a la carte Italian restaurant with wonderful ocean views and an outdoor stone bar area. The hotel’s Ascot Pub & Sports Bar is located a short walk from the main part of the property, across from the casino.

The hotel offers direct access to Maho Beach, a small but
beautiful stretch of golden sand, though it's shared with a number of other hotels and resorts and thus can get crowded. Planes fly
low over the beach as they approach (or depart from) nearby Princess Juliana International Airport, an unusual attraction that draws regular hoards of tourists.

The hotel’s Serenity Spa offers a range of massages, facials, scrubs, manicures, and pedicures. Some treatments incorporate local
ingredients, such as the guavaberry and sugar body scrub. The average-sized fitness center features weight-training machines, free weights, and cardio equipment, including treadmills and ellipticals. Sonesta also offers a bright kids’ club with colorful climbing
equipment, a ball pit, and other games. Aimed at children from 3 to 12 years old, the kids’ club includes supervised activities within this indoor play area as well as out at the pool and the beach.

A regular line-up of activities and events is organized
on-site, including water aerobics, beach volleyball, live music, and themed dinner nights. Guests also receive free day passes for Sonesta Maho’s sister resort, Sonesta Great Bay. For business travelers, there's a huge amount of event space for rent, ranging
from small meeting rooms to large banquet halls. These spaces are practical, but like the hotel’s other facilities, somewhat past-their-prime. Wedding planning services are also available. Free Wi-Fi is
available throughout the property, and self-parking is offered on-site for a surcharge.
