Bottom Line

The Hotel Alpino is an attractive mid-range resort-style property located in a pine forest in the lush countryside outside of Sao Roque, about 10 minutes from the city center. Although not especially modern or upscale, the hotel does offer a fun and relaxing stay with a dash of South American style in a quiet setting. The property's 85 alpine-style rooms have a mixture of whitewashed walls and dark wood trim and some have balconies with views. The wealth of facilities includes a big outdoor pool, a soccer field, tennis and basketball courts, a sauna, a steam room, and a playground. Scene

Resort-style tourist hotel in quiet wooded area with pool and sports facilities

The Hotel Alpino is nestled on 25 acres of lush vegetation and pine forests. To reach the hotel, guests must enter the property through a portal-style gate and drive down a small road bordered by trees on both sides. Housed in a distinctive white building with a red shingled roof, the hotel's interiors feature white walls, dark woods, dashes of red, and colorful South American rugs and wall hangings. Guests tend to congregate around the large outdoor pool, sitting or lying on hammocks or lounge chairs. The sprawling grounds offer ample opportunities for sports and outdoor recreation, but note that some of the facilities are a little worn; there are cracks in the basketball court and some of the interior spaces have a tired feel.

Location

Quiet wooded location near wineries, 10 minutes by car from Sao Roque

The Hotel Alpino is located in a quiet wooded area in the countryside, so guests need a car if they want to see local sights. It's just off the SP-270 highway, about a 10-minute drive south of the center of Sao Roque, an eco-friendly city with many protected green spaces and beautiful churches, including Matriz Church and Sao Benedito Church. The famous Roteiro do Vinho winery tour route starts a five-minute drive west of the hotel. Billed as the largest artificial ski park in Latin America, Ski Mountain Park is a 25-minute drive north. The city center of Sao Paulo takes 90 minutes to reach by car and Congonhas-Sao Paulo Airport is one hour east of the hotel. Parking is both ample and free.

Rooms

Whitewashed rooms with free Wi-Fi and minibars

The Hotel Alpino has 85 simple, alpine-style rooms in a three-story building. Rooms have a clean, uncluttered look, with whitewashed walls and dark wood doors, paneling, and trim. Dashes of red and black pervade and most rooms have native South American print bedspreads, rugs, and wall hangings. Rooms come with satellite TV (most rooms have older tube models rather than flat-screens), free Wi-Fi, in-room safes, and minibars. Tiled bathrooms include heavy wood framed mirrors and dark glass encased shower/tub combos. Some rooms have balconies, hardwood floors, living areas, and forest or pool views. Overall, the rooms could use a refresh but are entirely clean.

Features

Large outdoor pool, children's pool and sports facilities

The Hotel Alpino's impressive array of on-site facilities is topped by its giant outdoor pool, though the unheated water can be too chilly for some. Next to the main pool sits a round children's pool and a sun deck with lounge chairs. Guests can also jog on a trail through the pine trees or take a horseback or buggy ride through the lush countryside. Kids get an outdoor playground and indoor playroom, and staff supervision is available on long weekends and holidays. The Alpino also has two red-clay tennis courts, a full asphalt basketball court, an enormous grass soccer field, bocce ball and volleyball courts, and animal pens with goats, pigs, and rabbits. Inside, there's a sizable fitness room, a sauna, a steam room, a game room with billiards, a card room, and a small nightclub with karaoke and DJ. The restaurant has simple international cuisine, with a la carte and buffet menus and chicken, fish, steak, salads, and pasta. Room service is also an option and a breakfast buffet is available for a fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
