Bottom Line

The four-pearl Highmark Steamboat Springs boutique hotel is nestled at the bottom of Mount Werner making it easy for guests to access the slopes. The nearest gondola is under 10 minutes' walk, and the free shuttle service goes to other ski resorts and town. The hotel has an indoor/outdoor pool, a hot tub, and a modern fitness center, while the on-site gourmet grocery store makes it convenient for guests to prepare meals in the full-size kitchens in the 23 apartment-style units. The clientele is almost entirely families, though some couples stay here too, all drawn to the nearby mountain-related activities. Just a few minutes’ walk away, Sheraton Steamboat Resort is a good alternative if the Highmark is booked, and it has an on-site restaurant.

Luxurious hotel with mountain-lodge decor that draws families

Highmark Steamboat Springs is a boutique hotel housed in a six-story, Bavarian-style building made of partial stone. The lobby is luxurious but manages to maintain a homey, welcoming atmosphere with a mountain-lodge decor. Deep autumnal tones combine with luxe accents ranging from animal-print pillows to natural-wood candlestick holders. Gray stone floors are nicely complemented with Victorian-style leather chairs, and rather than a typical front desk, guests check in at a simple wooden table next to a cozy fireplace. Other areas of the hotel, such as the guest lounge, maintain the same style with wood-paneled walls, carved wooden furniture, fur and velvet pillows on Victorian-style couches and chairs, floral-patterned rugs, stone fireplaces, and woodland paintings. Most guests are families who have chosen the hotel for its condominium-style units and can be seen congregating in the pool area or in the lounge.

Within walking distance to a ski gondola, a short drive to most attractions

It’s a convenient eight-minute walk from the hotel to the nearest ski gondola going up Mount Werner. Outdoor and family-friendly activities in Steamboat Springs can be best reached by car or the shuttle service from the hotel. Howelsen Ice Arena and the Alpine Slide are an eight-minute drive away. Amaze’n Steamboat Family Fun Park is just a five-minute car ride, and the Tennis Center at Steamboat Springs is a three-minute drive. Fish Creek Falls is a 15-minute drive away, while Strawberry Park Hot Springs takes 25 minutes by car. There’s only a few restaurants on surrounding streets, but a more diverse selection of restaurants can be found within a five- to 10-minute drive away in downtown Steamboat Springs. Yampa Valley Regional Airport is the nearest airport, about a 35-minute drive away.

Apartment-style units with full-size kitchens, luxurious master bathrooms, and washer/dryers

Rooms at the Highmark Steamboat Springs are two- to four-bedroom condominiums with up to three bathrooms and all the comforts and furnishings of apartments. Though each unit is individually decorated, all have a luxurious western-influenced style with wooden floors, leather or upholstered couches, stone fireplaces, and wooden furniture. All have flat-screen TVs in bedrooms and living rooms, iPod docks and audio systems, dining room tables, and full-size kitchens -- each with a refrigerator, microwave, stove, oven, dishwasher, coffee/tea facilities, cutlery, cookware, and plates. Nice extras include tea and coffee facilities, washer/dryers, and balconies with plush outdoor furniture and mountain views. Some units have computers on the work desks, and others have bunk beds. There’s a daily towel and trash service; full housekeeping service is available mid-stay for those staying longer than seven days. The master bathrooms have glass-door marble showers and deep whirlpool tubs, while the other bathrooms in the units have shower/tub combos. All are stocked with toiletries, robes, and towels.

Heated pool, hot tub, fitness center, and an on-site gourmet grocery store and deli

A heated outdoor pool that guests can access from indoors is a highlight of the Highmark. The pool area also has a large hot tub and lounge chairs. There’s a fitness center with a variety of cardio machines and free weights, plus men’s and women’s steam rooms. Guests can book in-room massages for a fee. The gourmet grocery store located on the first floor is large and has a diverse wine selection and a deli that serves sandwiches, soups, and pizza, as well as coffee and pastries in the morning. The hotel provides free ski, snowboard, and bike storage, plus ski valet and discounted prices for rentals. There’s a business center and free Wi-Fi, and guests can use the free shuttle service to explore the town.
