Bottom Line

The Royal Sun Apartments is family-friendly property with a solid lineup of amenities and a location that's slightly removed from Sandy Beach's party scene -- but it's a 10-minute walk to the sea. Built in the mid-2000s, the three-pearl complex has 63 light and airy apartments with up-to-date kitchens and often balconies, but bathrooms are on the small side, TVs are old tube-style, and there's a daily fee for in-room Wi-Fi. Features include three pools in a central garden with a playground, a casual restaurant and bar that serves pizza and burgers, plus a fitness center and spa with a sauna and whirlpool. For a more romantic, child-free experience, travelers can check out the adults-only MPM Orpheus Boutique.

Royal Sun Apartments

Scene

Modern summer resort with a relaxed, family-friendly vibe

Much like the entire resort of Sunny Beach, this modern apartment complex buzzes with vacation verve during the summer. In the heart of its 100,000-square-foot central garden are three pools surrounded by sunbeds and umbrellas, where families spend most of the day. There's a small playground and well-maintained grassy patches lined with neat rows of hedges, and a lifeguard on duty to keep an eye on children splashing in the water. The same kid-centric vibe continues throughout the complex, at least until the little ones go to bed and the cocktails take over. Everyone is asked to keep it down after 11 p.m., so late-night partying occurs off-site.

Location

Self-contained resort on the Black Sea coast, 10-minute walk from beach

Twenty miles north of Burgas, the second largest city on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, is a curved stretch of golden sand called Sunny Beach, packed with resorts, aqua parks, nightclubs, and beach loungers as far as the eye can see. The hotel is situated in a slightly removed spot from the center of it all, about a 10-minute walk from the sea. Regular buses run to and from Burgas, where the nearest airport is located. The trip takes about an hour, but it’s roughly half the time in a cab. Once in Sunny Beach, you can get around with boat taxis, horse and carriage, and a “tourist train." Links extend to the 3,000-year-old town of Nessebar, six miles to the south.

Rooms

Modern, basic apartments with kitchens, and some add balconies

The air-conditioned apartments here are set up for longer stays than a night or two, featuring small kitchens that are stocked with all the necessities. Fridges, ovens, and electric burners are all up-to-date, plus there are kettles, toasters, cookware, and dishes. The modern units feel uncluttered and decor is pleasant, with terra-cotta flooring and bright orange accents. There's minimal furniture beyond the twins or double beds (two twins pushed together), and all rooms have small tables, work desks, sofa beds, armchairs, and wardrobes, but TVs are old tube-style and in-room Wi-Fi costs extra. Bathrooms are a bit tight, with shower/bath combos that are too small to soak in unless under four feet tall. Guests must also supply their own toiletries, but hairdryers are available on request. Upgrading means adding additional bedrooms and a balcony. Pool views are the most popular.

Features

A solid lineup of modern amenities including three pools, restaurant, gym, and spa

As a vacation resort, the Royal Sun Apartments satisfies all the summer basics, starting with the huge, child-friendly central garden and cocktail-catered pool area, which also includes a playground. Although handsome, the restaurant keeps mainly to pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, and Bulgarian dishes. Also on-site is a fitness center with modern cardio machines, and there's a spa with a whirlpool, sauna, and solarium that offers a short list of the massages, manicures, and beauty treatments. Shuttle service is available to the airport for an extra charge, as are car and bicycle rentals, and the reception desk has a currency exchange and is open 24 hours. There's no on-site parking, and Wi-Fi incurs a daily charge.
