Bottom Line

Built for the 1960 Winter Olympic delegation, this upscale village-style property is particularly appreciated for its bucolic grounds, which are crisscrossed by stone pathways and interspersed with adirondack chairs. The 56 rooms are available in a variety of configurations and sizes, some with a kitchenette, all with breakfast included in the price. The hotel is situated within Squaw Village, and offers ski-in and ski-out accessibility. Some guests have mentioned that the hotel may not be sound-proofed enough for certain tastes.

Oyster Hotel Review

PlumpJack Inn

Scene

Lodge-like property with fire pit, frequented by groups

Laid out like a small village, the spread-out property has the feel of a sporty camp, and is popular both with large groups coming to take advantage of the proximate ski facilities, and with weddings. The hotel was specifically tailored to accommodate skiers, a design element that extends to a number of common areas as well as the rooms themselves (think boot-removal space). The lobby and one of the restaurants are poured cement, but soft grays, plush seating, and rustic wood touches lend coziness. The property is unusually peaceful throughout, with a sunlit patio for daytime relaxing, and a lovely outdoor fire pit where guests congregate in the evenings. However, the serenity lets up during the busy winter season.

Location

In the middle of Squaw Village with direct access to the slopes

Directly adjacent to the gondola leading to Squaw Peak, the hotel offers ski-in and ski-out accessibility; it is also a few steps from the Squaw Village, which has a medieval feel with cobblestone streets and wood facades to all of the buildings. The hotel is an hour’s drive from the Reno-Tahoe airport; a shuttle runs between the village and the airport a handful of times per day.

Rooms

Large, homey rooms with spare but elegant decor

Recessed ceiling lighting, wheat-colored furnishings, and white bedspreads contribute to the airy feeling of these apartment-style rooms, of which several different layouts and sizes are available. Spacious bathrooms are outfitted with tile and shower/tub combos, and supplied with bathrobes. All rooms have coffeemakers and iPod docking stations, and cement entryways to afford space for removing ski boots. Rooms have ceiling fans but some feel a tad stuffy in summer. Additionally, walls may be on the thin side for some guests' taste -- noise can be an issue, particularly during high season and large events.

Features

Tree-lined outdoor pool, upscale wine-centric restaurant, meeting rooms

In terms of culinary options, the hotel offers a formal restaurant known for its wine list (Plumpjack started as a San Francisco-based wine shop, and has connections to Napa wineries), as well as a more casual bar and lounge. The grounds -- a big draw here -- are ample, with a number of wide pathways for walking and skiing in the winter months. There is a medium-size fitness center with large windows and a good handful of exercise machines and free weights. The small outdoor pool, set amongst pine trees, has a few lanes for swimming and an adjacent hot tub. The meeting room and event hall are airy and bright, with lots of natural light and exposed beams.
