Bottom Line

The 314-room Puerto Palace Hotel is a mid-range hotel offering lower rates than most of its competitors due to its location about a 15-minute walk from the city center and beach. Rooms are clean and feature balconies (some with sea views), air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs. Most guests spend the day relaxing by the hotel’s multiple pools, but other entertainment options include extensive outdoor sports facilities, a wonderful gym with classes, and evening live music. The main restaurant serves a varied -- if average -- buffet for all three main meals, and there is a small selection of snacks available at the pool bar. Free shuttle service is provided to central Puerto de la Cruz, but those looking to stay closer to the beach may want to compare rates at the H10 Tenerife Playa, which is also livelier.

Hotel Puerto Palace

Scene

Pleasant property with old-fashioned interiors and a quiet atmosphere

The Hotel Puerto Palace has been around for a few years -- and it shows. It's housed in a large pink building featuring mirrored windows and exterior elevators with red accents. Interiors are no more contemporary, featuring cane furniture decorated with 80’s-style flowery upholstery in blue or red, golden handrails on stairs, and lots of mirrored surfaces. Checkered floors -- though rather old-fashioned -- add some local charm, and potted plants make common spaces feel homey. While the indoors are nothing to write home about, the gardens are pretty and lush, brimming with palm trees, cacti, and tropical shrubs. Stone paths wind through manicured areas overflowing with flowers and decorated with local volcanic stones, and ample decks with seating offer plenty of space to relax in the sun.

Most guests here are older German couples, especially during the off-peak season, and the atmosphere is generally quiet and peaceful. There are several perks for families -- mini-golf, basketball court, kiddy pool, among others -- but unlike at other resorts in the area, the only entertainment offered is a few fitness classes and live music in the evening.

Location

Quiet location a 15-minute walk from the city center and the beach

Hotel Puerto Palace is located in a quiet residential area directly south of central Puerto de la Cruz. Though there isn’t much of general interest in the immediate vicinity, restaurants, shops, and bars are just an easy downhill walk away. The nearest beach is Playa del Castillo, which can be reached in about 17 minutes on foot. Historic attractions such as Bateria de Santa Barbara, Chorro Cuaco, Plaza del Charco, and the lighthouse are all more easily reached by car. Lago Martianez, a famous entertainment complex with pools and access to the beach, is just a five-minute drive away, as is the Canary Islands’ most famous zoo, Loro Parque. The drive to Teide Volcano National Park and Los Gigantes cliffs takes about an hour. The nearest airport, Tenerife Norte, is about a half-hour away. The hotel offers free shuttle service to the city center several times per day.

Rooms

Simple and dated rooms with balconies, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and mini-fridges

The hotel has 314 rooms divided into four main categories ranging between Single and Family units. They’re all decorated in the same simple style that combines basic brown floor tiles with generic blond-wood furniture and black-and-white bedspreads with matching curtains. Paintings of local landscapes and architecture are the only thing decorating walls. Though at 194 square feet (18 square meters) Single Rooms are smallish, all other categories are spacious, with plenty of space to move around and lots of built-in storage. Big sliding doors open to balconies furnished with plastic chairs and tables, and offer views of either the gardens, pools, or sea.

Standard amenities include air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TV with satellite channels. No kettles are provided. Wi-Fi is provided free of charge throughout the property, but there have been reports that it works best near the lobby. Safes are also available in all rooms but come with an extra charge. Clad in old-fashioned gray tiles, bathrooms are clean and all feature shower/tub combos, ample counter space, older wall-mounted hairdryers, and basic toiletries.

Features

Multiple pools, secluded clothing-optional area, excellent gym, basic spa, and an average buffet restaurant

The hotel offers a wide array of on-site features for guests of all types and ages. Its almost 1.48 acres of gardens are dotted by big pools, including a heated family one, a kiddy pool, and one with a waterfall. There are also a smaller pool and a whirlpool in the clothing-optional area, located on the rooftop deck. One of the hotel’s best features is its fitness center. It is large and modern, with tons of machines, an indoor squash court, and free group classes. The hotel also features volleyball, basketball, and tennis courts -- though there is a fee for use of the latter -- plus foosball and ping-pong tables, mini-golf, and a bocce ball area. The only entertainment here is some live music in the evening. A small room tucked away in the gardens offers massages and salon services a few hours per day, but there is no full spa on-site.

Puerto Palace's only restaurant offers buffet meals that get mixed reviews, especially the dinner spread, which most guests find bland and lacking in variety. There are also a pool bar and a lobby lounge, both with happy hour specials and live music. Six rooms of different sizes can be rented out for corporate and private events, and there's free on-site parking.
